Informatics is an Indian e-information company based in Bangalore, India.[4] The company provides technology and content solutions to libraries and publishers across India. It serves in education, research and information industry.[5]

History[edit]

Founded in 1980 by N V Sathyanarayana. It started as a firm providing information in the pre-internet era through a telex facility.[6]

In the early years, the company mainly focused on providing services like library supplies, document delivery and information collection through manual searching.

Through 1984 to 1991, Informatics collaborated with Dialog Information Services for building information exchange systems.[7]

In 1989, Informatics co-operated with Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) to set up the first online database service named Infotel.[7]

In 1990, Informatics for the first time in India introduced CD-ROM technology. Through the end of 1992, working around database developments, they had tie ups with 6 international information companies. In 1993, a new company named Faxon Informatics emerged with a partnership from US-based firm Faxon Inc. Alongside the CD publishing activity, they sold the first CD-ROM database in 2008.

In 1995, the company won its largest contract from Reuters for indexing their news feed.

In 2013, as a digital transformation strategy the company created a subsidiary called Informatics Publishing Ltd to focus on library market.[8][7]

Products and services[edit]

Informatics owns a collection of subscription-based offerings focused mainly on scientific and academic research.[5] Its principal products and services are database and content driven, catering solutions to research community in India.[9]

In 2001, Informatics developed its flagship cloud-based database product J-Gate to deliver e-journal literature .[10] Around 2006, they started offering free version of J-Gate named Open J-Gate[11] and also introduced a platform for business community named India Business Insight.[12][13]

Along with the content management, digitization and publishing services, Informatics also offers library solutions like: Koha implementation, EZproxy for remote authentication and RFID.
