The first edition of the fest was held in 2004, by the name Confluence.[1] First organized by the Technical Society[2] of the Student Activity Centre, NIT Rourkela, it involved various technical events, competitions, exhibitions and workshops which later became an annual legacy to be carried on in the subsequent years. The underlying spirit of Innovision was "to promote technological innovations and scientific thinking" . The edition of 2006 had entrepreneurs of NIT Rourkela getting involved and conducting many substantial activities. It had events ranging from robotics to a management event like Sharewars. Individual departments also conducted their own events like paper presentation, programming contests etc. A seminar was also held by the Hacking Guru – Ankit Fadia which became the main attraction of the fest that year.[3] In 2008, the Mathematics Club of NIT-Rourkela, Axiom was set-up, which organized many school level quizzes. The year 2009 welcomed the then chief managers and additional managers of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) as honourable guests for promoting the core courses through lectures. In the year 2010, Confluence was a huge success with a large number of events which attracted participants from all over India. A seminar on present market and opportunities in the software sector was presented by Ms. Meher Afroz from Microsoft. Workshops on MAYA and aero-modelling were very successful and helped the participants gain knowledge and experience from leaders in the respective sectors.[4]

In 2011, Confluence[5] was renamed as Innovision and was held from 4 November to 6 November [6] with a focus to escalate its standards and outreach.[7] Innovision made its debut with a participation of above 600 students. The chief guest was Dr. V Narayan, Head of the Liquid Propulsion Centre at ISRO.[8] Prof. Arnab Roy of IIT Kharagpur delivered a guest lecture on flights and aircraft. A total of 70 events were conducted, Arthayan being one of the main ones. A workshop on sand art was conducted by the international sand artist, Sudarsan Pattnaik. A sand competition subsequently followed to grab the heed of the guests.[9]

Most of the participation comes from sister NITs across India and colleges of Odisha, namely VSSUT, Burla; KIIT University, Bhubaneswar; College of Engineering and Technology (CET) and Silicon Institute of Technology, Sambalpur, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang.

Many competitions and challenges are held during the course of the fest. These are usually conducted by the various clubs under the 4 societies of the college. Some of the marked events in the previous and current versions of Innovision are listed below:

Market-o-mania is purely a marketing based event conducted by the Entrepreneurship Cell, of NIT Rourkela annually, wherein the participants will be acting as entrepreneurs/business persons and have to devise a strategy and advertise their product, make use of marketing tactics to sell their products better than other participants. Other participants shall act as customers who again will play the reverse role, the clever buyers. The event is a strategy-cum-fun event based on human psychology and convincing power.[33]

Smeaton’s Cube[edit]

Smeaton's Cube [34](Named after John Smeaton who was an English civil engineer who was responsible for the design of canals, bridges, lighthouses and harbours) is a competition for Civil Engineering undergrads where they design a cube that would undergo successive compressive tests following which a presentation on concrete is to be given. It is organized by the ICE, UK : Student Chapter, NIT Rourkela.

My BFF was another fun event which witnessed over 150 student participation where people got themselves clicked by professional photographers of Third Eye,[35] the photography club of the institute. The most liked picture is the winner.[36]

Disaster Diagnostics[edit]

Industrial jobs are outlined with potential hazards and accidents. Analysis of the nature of the risk associated with the work as well as inventing methods to avoid the same should always be the top priority for an engineer. AiChE[37] chapter of NIT Rourkela organized this flagship event.[38]

Organized by Cyborg,[39] the robotics club, Tread-o-Quest is the annual flagship event of Innovision. Participants develop a line follower bot which is tested on its time and accuracy.[40]

Death Race[edit]

The Death Race event, conducted by the Cyborg club every year, saw its sixth edition in Innovision'17.[42] The participants make bots which are subjected to fire, water, and different type of obstacles. They are judged on their time taken for the course. The event has the maximum prize money and is the flagship event of Cyborg.

Sherlocked in Civil[edit]

Due to lack of knowledge about surrounding nature, the concept of materials and architectural mistakes the failure in structures take place. Taking on this idea, the Institute Of Civil Engineering (ICE) conducted an event named "Sherlocked In Civil[43]". This event involved a case study concerning certain failures relating to the principles of Civil engineering where participants had to find out the root cause of the failure and give an investigation report of the same.

Grab Bucks[edit]

NIT-Rourkela start-up Pennyindia[44] organized their maiden event ‘Grab Bucks’. It was a game with two rounds consisting of mental ability and treasure hunt.
