The Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations is a research and teaching institute of the Aga Khan University based in London, UK, which is a part of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Institute is located in the Aga Khan Centre in King's Cross, London, formally opened in June 2018.[1]

History[edit]

AKU-ISMC was established in 2002 and took its first cohort of masters students on the MA in Muslim Cultures in 2006. It is part of Aga Khan University, was founded in 1983. The aim was to operate as both a research institute and a postgraduate training centre that could serve as a centre of scholarship from around the globe.

Research[edit]

AKU-ISMC academic faculty conduct multidisciplinary research in the social sciences and humanities. Research areas draw on anthropology, archaeology, history, economics, Islamic studies, political science and literary studies to explore a diverse range of themes relevant to Muslim Societies and populations around the world.

Publications[edit]

The publications department of AKU-ISMC publish independently and in conjunction with other major publishers on historical and contemporary issues related to the Muslims and Muslim Societies.

Education[edit]

MA in Muslim Cultures[edit]

AKU-ISMC deliver an MA in Muslim Cultures. From 2006 until 2019, the MA was delivered over 2 years. Beginning in 2019, the Institute revised the programme to be delivered over 18 months. The last 6 months of the revised programme are focussed exclusively on researching and producing an original thesis.

AMU-ISMC is an off-shore campus of the Aga Khan University accredited by the Higher Education Commission (Pakistan). It is regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in the UK.

Short Courses[edit]

AKU-ISMC deliver short courses aimed at both academic and non-academic participants.

Aga Khan Library[edit]

The Aga Khan Library is located across two floors of the London AKU-ISMC King's Cross campus. The collection is broad, but has specific collections of Fatimid era manuscripts and documents related to Ismaili Shi'a communities, past and present.

Outreach[edit]

AKU-ISMC run public events aimed at audiences beyond academic communities.
