ITI (Interactive Technologies Institute) [3] was conceived as Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute in early 2009 from a group of researchers, who led its formation as an autonomous research unit. This group consisted of Professors from the University of Madeira (UMa) and faculty recruited under the Carnegie Mellon International partnership.

These founders obtained a very positive independent evaluation and joined the Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica (ISR) Associated Laboratory (which became LARSyS from the national evaluation on 2013).

At the end of 2009, M-ITI Associação – the not-for-profit institution – was created as an association between the Regional Government of Madeira and UMa. M-ITI was the first and only innovation institute of UMa in an organizational model, which aimed at combining the Master' s-level curriculum with innovation-research projects and industries. In this model, ITI, as a research unit, and the M-ITI Association co-existed under a common vision that combined Master' s-level teaching with research and innovation projects.

M-ITI was the evolution of ITI into a wider national institutional context, which brought new opportunities for a more distributed sustainability model by drawing and providing career paths to dilute the tensions and focus on a single institution.

In 2020, ITI was established as a research unit of Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa (IST). ITI transformed into a multi-institutional context research unit with concrete affiliations with IST and the Fine Arts School of the U. Lisbon while retaining a strong presence in Madeira, where it was conceived.

Research Strategy[edit]

ITI's strategic priority was always to attract the world's best talent to Portugal, from gifted students to senior faculty members that could help make ITI a pioneer center in HCI research and design-driven innovation. ITI is currently associated with 40 integrated members, and 47 Ph.D. students totaling around 100 researchers, supported by a dedicated group of 5 staff members. This vibrant and enthusiastic community comes from 14 different nationalities from 4 continents and recognizes that excellence can only be achieved if you attract and retain the best. ITI is dedicated to the interdisciplinary field of HCI and encompasses Psychology and Social Sciences, Computer Science, and Creativity and Design as core scientific areas. The cross-pollination of these fields allows thriving application areas directed towards societal needs.

Assistive Technologies, Learning, and Digital Culture, and Sustainability have been distinguished by ITI as quintessential application areas to build potential and drive innovation.

ITI research rests on the following principles: Computing technology must match human capabilities, taking into account the needs and desires of users and other stakeholders, and economic, cultural, and social constraints.

Hence, ITI focuses on developing tools and technology [4] and design methods that support efficiency and creativity by understanding human behavior and development through social and ethical analyses of how people adopt and use technology. Furthermore, ITI boasts a risk-taking attitude based on creative ideas for new ways of envisioning technologies that impact the world and attempts to reach this will lead to general theories and methods that enhance and broaden the field.
