The International Association of Young Geographers (IAYG) is a nonprofit organisation in the field of geographic education. Established as a coalition of students and educators to develop geography educational programs in primary and secondary schools, the IAYG has expanded into a worldwide educational and humanitarian institution of professors, educators, university students, field experts, and other stakeholders, supporting the development of geographic education opportunities for young people, from initiatives for primary education to supporting recent university graduates and younger scholars.[1]

The IAYG organises student programmes, educator training, conferences and seminars, research prizes for early career geographers, and other initiatives around the world.[2][3] The IAYG's efforts include the Global Geography Curriculum Development Programme (GGCDP), which leads the development of national geography curricula in partnership with national governments.[4] Some IAYG programmes are student-based: the IAYG University Society System (IAYG-USS) is the component of the organisation that supports opportunities for future geographers, and is entirely composed of students in IAYG-affiliated geography societies.[5]

Programmes[edit]

Global Geography Curriculum Development Programme[edit]

The IAYG, affiliated local implementation partners in eight countries, content partners, and industry advisors, in close cooperation with national governments, lead the Global Geography Curriculum Development Programme, an effort to formulate national geography curricula and geographic education policy. Led by IAYG leadership and a Steering Committee of leading geographers, geologists, and industry advisors, the Programme works closely with Ministries of Education to develop and implement tailored curricula in geography, environmental studies, and sustainable development for millions of students.[6]

IAYG World Geography Challenge[edit]

The IAYG World Geography Challenge is the name of the IAYG's academic competition in geography for secondary school students, held in communities around the world. Each World Geography Challenge competition is a one-day event, typically held in schools or universities, that challenges local students through a variety of geography, GIS, and spatial thinking explorations. Challenges are often hosted in partnership with Ministries of Education and local partners.[7]

IAYG University Society System[edit]

The IAYG University Society System (IAYG-USS) is one of the largest components of the IAYG. Founded to represent the world's geography students and support opportunities in the field, the University Society System is the only part of the organization composed entirely of university students.

The System is composed of individual societies (branches), which work closely with each other and participate in the University Society System's programmes and events. Initially established with four university societies, the System has expanded to encompass branches in much of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Many branches were existing geography societies that acceded to the IAYG University Society System later - by date of formation, the two oldest branches in the University Society System date back more than five decades to 1963 and 1966. The global programmes of the IAYG University Society System include:

  • Dimensions - the world's first peer-reviewed academic journal for undergraduate students in geography[citation needed]
  • GeoIntern Programme - a programme connecting geography students and early career geographers to internship opportunities in their community
  • Conferences and seminars (dependent on region)

University Society System branches also develop programmes specific to the needs of their community, which are often closely supported by the IAYG.[8]

Other programmes[edit]

In the realm of geographic education, the IAYG also conducts educator training, provides student seminars, organises conferences, and leads other capacity-building efforts in education. As a humanitarian organisation, many of the IAYG's efforts are focused on underserved students in regions without opportunity in geographic education or education at large. The IAYG also supports the future development of the field by offering research prizes to young people in the fields of geography and environmental sciences.[9][10]

Governance[edit]

The IAYG is led by the President and the International Board of Directors (typically referred to as the International Board), which is composed of the President, Regional Directors, selected stakeholders, and leaders of key partner organisations. The organisation is further divided into regional branches, headed by Regional Directors, which manage operations across large geographic regions under the auspices of International leadership. Regional branches oversee the work of national branches, headed by a National Coordinator, which work in localities across the country they serve.

Special branches[edit]

In addition to national branches, the IAYG has established a number of special branches focusing on a special purpose or specific programmes. While they function like national branches and are entirely part of the IAYG, their work is in addition to the IAYG national branch in that country. These include:

  • The Liberian Association of Geographers (LAG), Liberia[11]
  • The Liberian Geography Teachers Association (LGTA), Liberia
  • Geography Students Association (GEOSAN), Nigeria

Partnerships[edit]

The IAYG's network of partners includes governmental institutions, intergovernmental organisations, strategic partners in geography and related fields, and local partners. These include global partnerships (such as the IAYG's partnership and support for the International Geographical Union Young and Early Career Geographers Taskforce), and local programme partners in countries where the IAYG works, such as:

  • The Association of Nigerian Geographers
  • The Geological Society of Oman
  • Ghana Geographical Society

In some circumstances, the IAYG also sponsors existing local networks and local community-based organisations that align with the IAYG's global mission.
