The inaugural observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men and Boys was commemorated on 31 January, 2020. It draws attention to the experience of violence suffered by men and boys.

While there has been a day to eliminate violence against women, no similar day was dedicated to men. The need for such day was argued for example by David Benatar, who wrote: "What we should deny is that violence against men and boys is less worthy of our concern than is violence against women and girls."[1]
The day was inaugurated in 2020 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, who has also revived the International Men's Day and initiated the World Day of the Boy Child. In his article for the journal New Male Studies, he describes violence against males as the "dinosaur in the room", because dinosaur is even larger and older than the "elephant in the room". He argues that male wellbeing can be improved by acknowledging the violence done to them.[2] The goal of the day is not just to reduce but to eliminate all forms of violence against men and boys.[3]
In 2021 the day will be commemorated by a panel discussion organized by Voice of Men 360.[4]
