Youth Against Rape (YAR) is an initiative of the Youth Against Injustice Foundation (YAIF), a registered Indian NGO founded by Piyush Monga with the aim of making India a rape free country (Rapemuktbharat). In October 2019, Monga started a cycle campaign of 50,000 kilometres across India with Ranchhod Dewasi and Yogesh Rawal, in order to promote the goals of the group. Monga and others were sued by IMG Ventures for defamation in August 2020 over allegations that a modelling agency had participated in sexual abuse.

Background[edit]

According to government data from 2018, at least one woman reports a rape every 15 minutes on an average in India. Almost 34,000 rapes were reported in 2018, barely changed from the year before. Of which over 85% led to charges and 27% to convictions, says National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) in the annual crime report released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

History[edit]

Piyush Monga, a young graduate working in Delhi, was concerned by the increasing number of rape cases in India. After discussing matters with Yogesh Rawal and Ranchod Devashi, they decided to set up an Instagram page called "Youth against rape" which quickly gained 50,000 followers.[7] As of 2020, it has 215,000 followers.[8]

They set up a non-governmental organization called the Youth Against Injustice Foundation which works on eliminating injustices such as rape, fake rape allegations and sexual abuse from India.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Monga, Rawal and Devashi decided to make a bicycle tour to promote their agenda.[17] In October 2019, the three set off from Jantar Mantar, New Delhi with green signal from Nirbhaya's parents.[18][19][20][21][22] By December 2019, the three had visited over 160 schools in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Gujarat.[7][23][24][25][26] The three aim to travel over 50,000 kilometres in over two years.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33]

The NGO aware people about their agenda and demands by social media and rallies.[35][36][37][38][39]

Demands[edit]

The NGO demand death penalty for rapists without president mercy rule and 14 year punishment for false accusation of rape.[40][41][42][43][44]

Controversies[edit]

Yogita Bhayana of People Against Rape in India (PARI) made a complaint against Sunny Verma, owner of IMG Ventures (a modelling company) about sexual abuse. The National Commission for Women replied and issued notices to Mahesh Bhatt, Urvashi Rautela, Esha Gupta, Mouni Roy, Ranjvijay Singh, Sonu Sood and Prince Narula.[45][46][47] After this, IMG Ventures filed a defamation case against Piyush Monga, Yogita Bhayana and Deepanshu Menaria claiming 1.5 Crore rupees.[48][49]
