The International History and Heritage Exhibition(ইতিহাস উৎসব),[1] held in Kolkata, is a unique annual exhibition held in February[2] every year to create awareness, conserve, protect and preserve the rich history and heritage of the land.[3][4] The prestigious international exhibition is organised by Sabarna Sangrahashala.[5][6][7][8]

Inception[edit]

The Exhibition was started on a small scale in 2006 by Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad.[9] With passage of time the exhibition has acquired international status and now is a prime event in Kolkata.

Duration[edit]

The exhibition traditionally starts on the first or second Sunday in February every year. It is a four day event. Besides the exhibition based on different themes every year, seminar, open quiz, cultural programmes and open house session are also held.[10]

Venue[edit]

The exhibition is held at the Sabarna Sangrahashala complex in Barisha, in the South Western part of Kolkata.[11]

Themes[edit]

Every year the Exhibition is held on different focal themes. A partner country is chosen every year. The exhibition, through a special gallery, portrays the history and heritage of the partner country and tries to highlight the socio-economic and cultural ties with India. The exhibition also promotes tourism of that partner country. In 2014 the partner country was Bangladesh; in 2015 Bhutan; and in 2016 it was Sri Lanka.[12] The governments of the partner countries through their EmbassY and High Commission participate and cooperate in the exhibition.[13]

Importance[edit]

The International History and Heritage Exhibition has emerged as an important annual event in Kolkata and is only of its kind in eastern India. Visitors from across the country and foreign visit the exhibition in large numbers and witness the rich tradition and cultural heritage of the land through display of rarest artifacts, documents, maps, and photographs.[14] The four day exhibition attracts large number of school and college students besides eminent celebrities and common people.[15]

International History and Heritage Exhibition 2014[edit]

The 9th International History & Heritage Exhibition 2014 was based on the theme ‘Parampara'. The Exhibition highlighted the 475 years of Friendship between the Great Mughal family with the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and hence several rare artifacts from the Mughal Andormahal besides the Diamond Ring gifted by Emperor Jahangir to Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury (Gangopadhyay)[16] was displayed for the public. A special section was dedicated to Bangladesh. The history, heritage and culture of Opaar Bangla was reflected through different displays. As usual there was the theme related Philatelic show and Numismatics. Open Quiz Nostalgia'14 hosted by famous Quiz masters Debkumar Mitra and Sanjoy Roy Choudhury was another regular attraction. Like previous years a special musical evening dedicated to Wizard of Bengali Lyrics Shri Pronob Roy was held on 11 February. The 25th Silver Jubilee edition of the heritage Hand Written Magazine Saptarshi was launched. For the first time ever in history any hand written magazine was created jointly by people of two nations-India and Bangladesh. Ishrat Jahan Unity was the Editor from Bangladesh while Dipak Kumar Roy Choudhury and Devarshi Roy Choudhury were editors from India.[17]

The event was inaugurated by eminent writers Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay[18] and Tapan Bandhopadhyay, Actor Shankar Chakraborty, Mughal descendant H.E Mumtaj Hussain Chowdhury, and Director Biswajit Ganguly. Eminent politician Md. Salim, Singers Neepabithi Ghosh and Saikat Mitra, CAB Treasurer Biswarup Dey were among other Guests of Honour.[19]

International History and Heritage Exhibition 2015[edit]

The 10th International History & Heritage Exhibition 2015 was based on the theme ‘Dasamritam'. And highlighted on ten different topics. The Exhibition showcased some of the rarest artifacts of Indus Valley Civilisation collected by the family members from different sources and sites. A special section was dedicated to the evolution of world Comics with special tribute to Late R. K. Laxman and Narayan Debnath. The history, heritage and culture of Bhutan was reflected through different displays. The section on Bhutan was supported by The Royal Government of Bhutan. As usual there was the theme related Philatelic show and Numismatics. Open Quiz Nostalgia'15 hosted by famous Quiz masters Debumar Mitra and Sanjoy Roy Choudhury was another regular attraction. A special tribute was paid to the descendants of Atmaram Thakur. Like previous years a special musical evening dedicated to Wizard of Bengali Lyrics Shri Pronob Roy was held on 10 February. The 26th edition of the heritage Hand Written Magazine Saptarshi was launched. For the second time ever in history any hand written magazine was made jointly by people of two nations-India and Bangladesh. Ishrat Jahan Unity was the Editor from Bangladesh while Dipak Kumar Roy Choudhury and Devarshi Roy Choudhury were editors from India.[20]

The event was inaugurated by eminent singers Pandit Ajay Chakraborty and Ramanuj Dasgupta, Mr. Phuntko Dupka, (Dy. Consular General, Government of Bhutan), Ms. Rinzin (Consular-Education, Government of Bhutan) and Mughal descendant H.E Mumtaj Hussain Chowdhury,. Eminent players Subash Bhowmick, Surajit Sengupta and Sibaji Banerjee, Media Director of Atlético de Kolkata Anilava Chatterjee besides, actor Krishnakishore Mukherjee and singer Parimaol Bhattacharya were also present as Guests of Honour. The team of Tumi Robe Nirobe of Zee Bangla were also present.[21][22]

International History and Heritage Exhibition 2016[edit]

The 11th International History & Heritage Exhibition 2016[23] was based on the unique theme ‘Colonial India 1615-1947'.[24] The Exhibition displayed some of the rarest artifacts of the British Period, collected by the family members from different sources. A special section was dedicated to Derozian Peary Chand Mitra, whose social reforms are still remembered after 200 years of his birth anniversary. The history, heritage and culture of Sri Lanka was reflected through different displays. The section on Sri Lanka was supported by The Government of Sri Lanka through its Embassy in India. As usual there was the theme related Philatelic show and Numismatics. Open Quiz Nostalgia'16 was another attraction. The Open Quiz was hosted by famous Quiz masters Debumar Mitra and Sanjoy Roy Choudhury. A special musical evening dedicated to Wizard of Bengali Lyrics Shri Pronob Roy was held on 9 February. The 27th edition of the heritage Hand Written Magazine Saptarshi was also launched. This edition of Saptarshi was been edited by Dipak Kumar Roy Choudhury and Devarshi Roy Choudhury.[25]

The event was inaugurated by eminent actor Chandan Sen,[26] singer and grand daughter of Kazi Nazrul Islam Anindita Kazi, actor Subhankar Saha and Mughal descendant H.E Mumtaj Hussain Chowdhury. Eminent personalities RJ Raja of Friends FM, and singer Jayati Chakraborty besides Justice Ashok Kumar Gangopadhyay and Justice Kalyanmoy Ganguly besides eminent politician philanthropist Biman Bose[27] and Tanmoy Bhattacharya were Guests of Honour on different days and events. On behalf of Sri Lanka S. Jayawardhane and his family, all being relatives of former Sri Lankan President Jayawardhane, were present.[28][29][30]
