International Rescue Instructors Association
The International Rescue Instructors Association is a membership organization with international members represented in 5 Regions who are committed to enhancing the Instructor experience. Known by its acronym IRIA, the association is committed to providing instructor membership accreditation and certification to promote instructor standards in water rescue and for the professional boater role. IRIA is an international standards organization and supports all accepted standards and regulatory bodies such as ISO, NFPA, ANSI, FEMA, ASTM, and others. The IRIA standards are designed both as a stand-alone system and to be able to adapt and work within other accepted standards to further enhance their meaning and application. The IRIA risk management process is based on both an operational and legal foundation.
History
The Rescue Instructors Association was formed in 1984, in California, by Jim Segerstrom, Larry Gibson, Warren Berg, Rob McCloud, and Mike Croslin.[1][2] The credibility of the group was based on the informal membership of a number of court-recognized, subject matter experts (SME) in their technical fields.[3][4][5]
Jim Segerstrom was also the founder of Rescue 3 International.[6]
It was to act as an informal “certification group” for their various rescue training operations. These water rescue technicians were working and training in rope rescue, swiftwater, and flood environments.[7]
Jim Lavalley and Jim Segerstrom began teaching courses under The Global Rescue Group.
In 1990, it became the International Rescue Instructors Association, due to international membership requests.
In 2000, Mitch Sasser of Tandem Rescate in Patagonia, Chile joined the IRIA instructor staff for river guide training and flood and swiftwater rescue training.[8]
In 2006, Jim Lavalley, founder of Rescue Canada, an international rescue training company, updated the Absolutes and the Matrix on behalf of IRIA.[9] [10]
In 2010, IRIA became compliant with ISO 15489-2001 Records Management and ISO 31000-2009 [11] Risk Management (Principles and Guidelines), in addition to ISO 9001-2008 [12] Quality Management, which began in 2007 with Jez Hunter in the UK.
In 2013, Jim Lavalley was awarded a Higgins and Langley award for Lifetime Achievement.[13]
In 2017, a new set of principles were written, and the International Rescue Instructors Association was restructured and incorporated federally as a non-profit organization in British Columbia, Canada.
In 2020, the IRIA Risk Matrix was updated; Advisory boards were created for Asia, Europe, South and North America, and Australia.
Membership
The International Rescue Instructors Association has international affiliates represented in the following countries: Belgium, Norway, United States of America, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Poland, India [citation needed][14]
