Interstellar Space: Genesis is a sci-fi turn-based strategy 4X video game developed by Praxis Games for Microsoft Windows released on July 25th, 2019.

Gameplay[edit]

In Interstellar Space: Genesis you play as the emperor of a space empire in your quest to become the ruler of the galaxy. In your journey, you will explore the galaxy and discover mysteries among the stars. You will colonize worlds, design and build spaceships, meet other empires and deal with them via diplomacy, or meet them in battle in tactical turn-based combat. The gameplay is comparable to other space 4X games such as the Master of Orion series, especially the second installment Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares....[1] [2] [3][4][5]

Interstellar Space: Genesis's soundtrack was composed by the awarded winner composer Grant Kirkhope (GoldenEye 007, Civilization: Beyond Earth, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle) and Neon Dolphin's Ryan McQuinn[6] (Lotia, Dungeons & Doritos, Call of Cthulhu Mystery Program, Liberty: Vigilance, Dark Dice). The soundtrack won the Outstanding Achievement silver medal award from the Global Music Awards on May 2019.[7]

Development[edit]

Interstellar Space: Genesis is the first game developed by Praxis Games, a small studio founded in 2017 consisting of the designer and programmer Luís Almas (aka Adam Solo) and programmer Hugo Rosado (for the base-game). Adam Solo run the SpaceSector.com website since 2009 up until 2014, a blog about sci-fi and space strategy games[8].

In an interview for eXplorminate, Adam Solo said that "The Master of Orion games of the 90’s, especially Master of Orion 2, were the biggest influences and sources of inspiration to design our own space 4X strategy game, but there were other games as well, like Civilization, Imperium Galactica 2, and even Crusader Kings 2.".[9]

Darkstation's host Jonathan Miley talked with Adam and Hugo about their game being "designed with choices, consequences, and replayability in mind as well being inspired by Master of Orion 2".[10]

The game was released on July 25th, 2019 and made available to purchase on Steam[11], Fanatical, Humble Bundle and Itch.io. Both the Humble and Itch.io stores offer a DRM-free version of the game.[12].[13]

In November 18th 2020 the expansion/DLC "Natural Law" was released[14][15]. Natural Law adds 2 new playable races, each fully equipped with unique new capabilities which are also usable by custom races. It also includes 9 new fully animated ruler options, 4 new music tracks, and 4 new leaders.[16][17][18][19]

On January 11th, 2021 Interstellar Space: Genesis and its DLC were released on GOG, offering a new option to get the game in DRM-free form.[20].[21]

Reception[edit]

StrategyGamer.com reviewed the game with a 4/5 score and said that "It is a proof of concept that an old genre can be resurrected. A return to a genre classic with meticulous attention to what fans of 4X Space empire builders crave."[22].

Oliver "Mezmorki" Kiley (for eXplorminate) gave the game a "Recommended" score and said: "ISG shows tremendous sophistication and design aptitude, and we ended up with a solid, traditional 4X game that brings along a host of subtle, but impactful design innovations. On that basis alone, it’s worth a serious look."[23]

Geeks Under Grace gave the game a 8/10. In the bottom line of their review they say: "Interstellar Space: Genesis provides accessible, streamlined 4x space strategy gameplay that it is definitely worth a look—and just one more turn.".[24]

Cubed3 reviewed the game with a score of 6/10 and had this to say about the game: "What is unique about Interstellar Space: Genesis, isn't that it is that unique, but it has enough new ideas that breath some much needed like into the genre you might as well call 'The Master of Orion genre.'".[25]

Ilvideogioco.com reviewed the game as 8.5/10 saying that "Being an entirely indie production, the result is nothing short of incredible."[26].

The Fandomentals website scored the game at 7.8/10 and summarize it as "A beautifully rendered addition to the 4X genre, Interstellar Space: Genesis is worth a look for fans of the genres and newbies alike. While it's a bit hard to know what one is exactly supposed to be doing, once you find your feet its easy to get sucked in. Retro visuals and a lush soundtrack complete the package, and it's easy to forget this is an indie game.".[27]

The game currently has an aggregate review score of 7.0 from users on Metacritic and an average of 7.0 metascore from critics (StrategyGamer and Cubed3 reviews referenced above).
