Irasutoya (Japanese: いらすとや) is a Japanese website that provides royalty free stock illustrations owned by illustrator Takashi Mifune. The name came from Japanese words for "illustration" (イラスト, irasuto) and "shop" (, ya) that were converted into hiragana.

Irasutoya, with its huge variety of illustrations, is widely popular in Japan. The site offers illustrations with vast array of themes: festival, family, profession, etc. Illustrations of Irasutoya can be found on social media, public events, television programs, and bulletin boards of Japanese government offices.[1]

Purchasing and use

Illustrations distributed on Irasutoya can be used free of charge by any individual or corporation, for commercial and non-commercial use, as long as they abide by the terms,[2] such as not selling the illustrations themselves as products and not using them in illegal activities.

For commercial use, up to 20 illustrations can be used for free in one use. If the person or group used more than 20 items commercially, they must pay additional royalty fee.[3]

Copyright

All of the illustrations on Irasutoya are free to use, but they're still owned and copyrighted by Takashi Mifune. They can be freely edited and processed within the scope of the rules. However, there is no transfer of copyright depending on the presence or absence of processing or the degree of processing.[2]

Collaboration

The first episode of anime television series I'm Standing on a Million Lives was recreated with entirely Irasutoya illustrations. The special episode that was aired on October 2020 is a part of collaboration between the series and Irasutoya.[4]

On January 4, 2021, in commemoration of the 1000th chapter of One Piece, a total of 20 illustrations of the characters appearing in the manga were released.[5]
