Islam is the second largest practiced religion in Mumbai, after Hinduism. According to the 2011 census, Mumbai is 20.7% being Muslim, corresponding to 2,583,360 Muslims in the city. There are other estimates that puts the number of Muslims in Mumbai to a higher number, such as some estimates said that the number of total Muslim population in Mumbai is around 3 to 4 million. Mumbai has the largest Muslim population outside of any cities outside Muslim-majority countries. The city is home to around 19.92% of all Muslims in Maharashtra.
Muslims in Mumbai are of various ethnicities, such as Marathi-speaking Muslims, Gujarati-speaking Muslims, Konkani-speaking Muslims, etc. The majority of Mumbai's Muslims adhere to Sunni of the Hanafi school, while a minority adhere to either Shia or the Shafi'i school. The Haji Ali Dargah is an important factor and place of Islam in Mumbai.
