Island Zero is a 99-minute 2018 Horror/Sci-Fi film written by Tess Gerritsen and directed by Josh Gerritsen through Donkey Universe Films.[2]

Summary[edit]

Tucker Island is an isolated fishing community some 40-miles off the coast of Maine and completely dependent on the ferry and fishing ships for food, fuel, and supplies, especially since the fish and lobsters have vanished. A few days before Christmas the phone, radio, internet and VHF access ends without explanation. The ferry fails to show on time, and as the days pass the residents grow agitated as they face dwindling supplies. Fishermen who try to leave the island for help vanish; only pools of blood and a strange blue substance are found in their wake. Gradually the survivors understand the U.S. Navy has cut them off for the world in order to prepare for an invasion of intelligent, cold-blooded sea predators with an unusual ability to evade detection. The plan is to contain the creatures on the island and erase the humans who could witness their work, thus taking the science of their evasion for government use. The survivors must decide if they should barricade themselves and starve or be killed by the Navy, or risk being eaten in one last battle.

Reception[edit]

Island Zero received a Rotten Tomatoes Score of 36%.[4]

Controversy[edit]

The original opening scene showed the death of a pet dog,[5] and this influenced the negative reviews that followed the first screening. Rotten Tomatoes' Rob Hunter said, Island Zero gets its weakest scene out of the way at the very start with some rough acting and the cliched killing of a dog — it’s a horror movie necessity.[6] Ultimately this was an error in filming with the responses being overwhelmingly negative. Accepting this, the scene was entirely re-shot with a scene that replaced Yacht Man and Sweetie the Dog with Kelly McAndrew, in the role of Rachel, Ellie's mother and Sam's wife. The scene moved the plot forward and gave the film a foreshadowing of things to come. In outlining the error and the work to make the film more acceptable, Tess Gerritsen wrote a full explanation of the negative press, the re-filming process, and finishing with, '...never, ever, kill the dog.'"[7]

Jim Morazzini of Voices From the Balcony, a horror review blog, noted that both scenes are evocative of The Boogens.[8]

Reviews[edit]

Morbidly Beautiful wrote, "In less capable hands, a movie about a new species of invisible, carnivorous sea creatures that mutilate and devour the local inhabitants of a remote island would be nothing more than fodder for a ridiculous SyFy creature feature.". Ryan C. Bradley of Wicked Horror criticized the way the special effects were made, but finished with, 'Despite its problems, there’s a lot to like in Island Zero. There’s a campy sensibility that goes well with the modernized monster movie.'

Voices From the Balcony's Jim Morazzini reviewed, "…a slow burn of a film. It keeps the menace off-screen for most of the film while it builds up suspense bit by bit until the final act."
