Island of Stability
Island of Stability (Persian: جزیره ثبات) was the phrase that Jimmy Carter used to description the circumstances of Iran under the leadership of the last Shah of Iran, Muhammad Reza Pahlavi.
Place and date[edit]
Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, traveled to Iran In late December 1977. On the eve of new year in Niavaran Complex he said: "Iran is an island of stability in one of the most troubled area of the world."[1][2] Also, he called Muhammad Reza Pahlavi as a popular king among Iranians in this speaking.[3][4]
Consequences[edit]
After this speaking, Muhammad Reza found the more power to suppression opponents. One week later, on Saturday, January 07, 1978, the article "Iran and Red and Black Colonization" was published in Ettela'at daily under the pseudonym. This article was against Ayatollah Khomeini. Following article publication, several protest were occurred in Mashhad, Qom, and Tehran. Also, Ayatollah Khomeini convicted Carter's speaking and called Shah, Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, as a tyrant and traitor.[5]
Reasons of this support[edit]
Ahmad Zeidabadi believes Carter was aware about the sporadic protests against Muhmmad Reza in Iran and knew the Iranian society is unstable so it seams he has merely called Iran as an Island of stability to consolation to Muhammad Reza Pahlavi and to ensure him that U.S. government supports of him.[6] Sadegh Zibakalam says this speaking was based on Carter false impression of the Iran's circumstances and believes Americans were unable to see the storm (Iranian Revolution) was frond of Island of stability.[7]
