"It Happened 'That Night'" is the first episode of the third season of Pretty Little Liars, and the forty-eighth episode overall, which premiered on ABC Family on June 5, 2012. It was directed by Ron Lagomarsino and written by I. Marlene King. The series follows the lives of four girls — Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Emily — whose clique parts after the disappearance of their leader, Alison; later they begin receiving various messages from someone using the name "A" who threatens to expose their secrets — including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew. In this episode, set five months after "A" was revealed to be Mona Vanderwaal, the girls struggles with the aftermath of Maya St. Germain's death and an unexpected event throws them back into danger. Meanwhile, a new "A" surfaces.

Upon its original airing, the episode yielded 2.93 million viewers.

Plot[edit]

Five months after the previous episode, the girls get together in the Hastings living room to drink. Emily is still grieving over Maya's homicide, and this results in her getting wasted. The girls fall asleep and Emily disappears. They call her and later find her in front of Alison's grave, discovering that Alison's casket is empty, and her body's gone. Spencer checks Emily's phone and discover someone used Spencer's phone to call Emily, which means that someone broke into the Hastings residence to use the phone and incriminate them. Emily isn't able to remember anything from the previous hours, so the girls bury the shovel Emily was holding and create an alibi to put them kilometers away from the crime scene.

The morning after, Spencer's mother Veronica calls them commenting about Alison's grave being dug up, and Spencer lies to her, saying they were at the lake house during all night. Afterwards, Aria has a nightmare while sleeping on Ezra's sofa, and he informs her that's there is no longer "A". Ezra theorizes that Maya may had found out something which could connect Garrett to Alison's death and he killed her while she was trying to tell Emily everything. Meanwhile, Hanna and Ashley are shopping and talking about their sexual lives when Spencer and Veronica come in. The two mothers talk about protecting their daughters, while Hanna and Spencer are concerned about the night before and the possibility of being unsafe again. While talking, Spencer ignores a call from an unknown number. At the Fields residence, Emily unpacks from her trip to Haiti to build houses. Pam, her mother, informs that reporters are back again asking questions. The scene them jumps to the Radley Sanitarium, where Hanna secretly visits Mona, who has been silent since their first secret encounter. Hanna tries to talk with her, unsuccessfully. While leaving, Hanna runs into Wren, Spencer's ex-boyfriend, who promises to keep Hanna's visitations a secret to everybody. Hanna later gets a call from Wren, who says Hanna's visits are helping Mona's recovery. At Spencer's room, Toby walks in using a towel, and they kiss. Spencer receives another unknown call, but denies it again.

During senior registration, Spencer, Hanna and Aria notice Lucas talking with a skinny brunette who resembles the Dark Swan from the Masquerade Ball. Apparently, after the Masquerade, Lucas went dark and is shutting everyone out. The girls ask for Emily, who isn't responding their calls. Emily is then shown at the courtyard, watching the girls conversation. After, while in the restroom, Aria sees someone in a black hoodie and black sneakers in the room. Aria panics and screams. Hanna and Spencer find her in the room's floor crying, and ensure her that Mona ("A") is barely in coma inside the psychiatric hospital. Later that day, Aria helps her mother pack her things since she and Byron are getting divorced. Whilst recovering from Maya's death, Emily meet with Toby to talk about their lives. Toby confirms that he's doing fine on his own, and is happy being away from Jenna. Toby asks if Emily's doing fine, and she responds she wasn't building house in Haiti during the summer, instead she was partying and getting wasted. He comforts her, saying her friends accept her for who she is. Aria is getting ready for a date with Ezra when he mother comes in and tells her that the police want to talk to her. The girls are questioned by the police separately and all tell the same story about catching up at Spencer's lake house. Veronica informs the questions are routine and the girls have nothing to worry about since they have an alibi. Hanna pays another visit to Mona, but Mona hallucinates, thinking Hanna is Alison dressed in a red coat.

At the Lost Woods Resort, Spencer thinks someone is watching her as she finally accepts the call from the unknown person. It is revealed to be Garrett, who asks Spencer to visit him in jail. There, he says the police was about to frame Alison's murder on Spencer. Additionally, he tells her that she and the others aren't safe, as well as there's a lot she doesn't know. He argue that he knows who killed Alison, but will only reveal that in exchange of Spencer placing her mother as his lawyer. Spencer is about to leave when he, being restrained by a guard, shouts that he knows who took Alison's body. Meanwhile, in the streets, Emily sees a blue car which triggers her memory about that night, with vague images. She gets ready to approach the car, but receives a text stating, "I bet you remember me," and the car drives off.

Later, Emily goes to Spencer's house and reveals what happened to her in relation to the text and to her memory block. After revealing the strange message, they guess it's Mona, but Hanna reveals she's been visiting Mona, and that's impossible to be her, since Mona's even unable to talk. Spencer takes the girls to the Lost Woods Resort and shows them a 3D diagram she created in order to recreate the lair. The other girls reveal to Emily that, after Mona's unconscious body was found, they went to the resort to clean "A's" lair, but the room was already cleaned up. They discuss the likelihood that Mona had been working with someone else. Spencer believes to be the Black Swan. Shortly after, they hear Spencer's car's alarm go off. The vehicle's door are wide open, and the seats are covered in photographs of the girls at the cemetery in front of Alison's violed grave. They then receive a simultaneous message: "Mona played with dolls. I play with body parts. Game on, bitches. –A"
