JOEN Inc. (株式会社JOEN, Kabushiki-gaisha JOEN) is a Japanese anime production and planning company headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Established in May 2022, it is a joint venture between four major entities: animation studios CloverWorks and Wit Studio, production company Aniplex, and publisher Shueisha.[1]
History
The establishment of JOEN Inc. on May 30, 2022, was a direct response to the collaborative success of the anime adaptation of Spy × Family. While that series was produced by a partnership between CloverWorks and Wit Studio, it operated under a traditional production committee led by Toho. The creative synergy between producers Yuichi Fukushima (CloverWorks) and Tetsuya Nakatake (Wit Studio) during this period highlighted the need for a permanent corporate framework that would allow studios to move beyond "work-for-hire" roles and become central stakeholders in the business lifecycle of a franchise.[2]
The name "JOEN" is a play on the English word "join" and several Japanese homophones for joen (助演, meaning "supporting role"; 助円, "assisting smooth connections"; and 助縁, "support through ties"). The corporate logo, featuring three horizontal lines, is a reference to the Japanese legend of the "Three Arrows," symbolizing the strength found in unity.[1]
Since its inception, JOEN has positioned itself as a reformist entity within the Japanese animation industry. Historically, animation studios often received a fixed production fee while the majority of royalties from merchandising and international distribution were retained by publishers and distributors. JOEN’s structure—owned in part by the studios themselves—was designed to funnel secondary profits back into the studios. This capital is intended to be used for improving staff salaries, upgrading production environments, and investing in internal talent development.[3]
While initially focused on managing collaborations for existing Shueisha properties, JOEN expanded its remit in 2025 to include the planning of original cinematic works. In late 2025, the company announced its role as the primary production hub for the omnibus film project Grotesqqque. Directed by Atsushi Nishigori, the project utilized the combined technical strengths of both CloverWorks and Wit Studio, marking JOEN's first major step into large-scale original intellectual property (IP) management.[4]
