Jack Carl Dean, better by his online alias JaackMaate, or simply Jaack, (born 7 March 1993) is an English commentary YouTuber, internet personality, comedian, podcast host, and actor. He is best known creating JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast, a comedy talk show. Dean has been creating YouTube videos since 2008. In 2012, Dean was on season 13 of British TV series Big Brother. He spent a week in the house as a ‘guinea pig’.

Early life[edit]

Jack Carl Dean was born on 7 March 1993 in Norwich, England. Dean studied media studies at Sewell Park Academy. He worked at restaurant Bella Italia but later quit to make YouTube videos full-time.[2] He is close to his father, Steve Dean.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

YouTube[edit]

Originally making sketches and vlog style rants, Dean gained national recognition after a video of his criticism of British YouTuber Zoella's advent calendar went viral.[3][4] Dean saw himself as an 'Anti-YouTuber', creating content on products, events and behaviours of YouTubers. Dean was also critical of Alfie Deyes's 'Living on £1' video[5], Logan Paul's return to YouTube after his controversy surrounding the filming of a suicide victim[6] and YouTuber Oli White's merchandise.[7][8]

In 2019, Dean reached one million subscribers on his JaackMaate YouTube channel.[9]

In May 2021, Dean spent ten days visiting all 51 cities in England and hid "golden tickets" in aluminium tins, with each one containing a chance to win a share of GBP£10,000. 45 tickets were worth fifty pounds, five tickets were worth £500 and one random ticket was worth £5,000.[10]

JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast[edit]

Dean is the host of comedy podcast JaackMaate's Happy Hour Podcast (often shortened to JaackMaate's Happy Hour or Happy Hour, not be confused with happy hour) alongside Twitch streamer Stevie White and YouTuber Robbie Knox. YouTuber Dudey Rhino also co-hosted the show but departed in 2020.[11][12] [13] The show originally began as a YouTube drama-commentary series with Alex Elmsie (better known as ImAllexx) before moving toward a comedy talk show genre, which occasionally touches on drama and more serious topics, such as mental health, politics and more. The flag of Niue is often used as Happy Hour's signature emoji.

The podcast has had appearances from a range of guests including Ricky Gervais, KSI, DanTDM, Jack Whitehall and more. Apart from celebrities, Happy Hour has also seen the likes of former police officers, neuroscientists, and ex-drug lords.

At the start of 2020, Dean and Robbie Knox started a spin-off show, titled "Happy Half Hour". It was recorded remotely at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and was published under the Happy Hour brand on Spotify. The podcast episodes were around 30 minutes long, and topics discussed included video games, alcohol, clubbing and more. The first episode aired on 24 January 2020, and the final episode aired on 1 May 2020. 15 episodes were published in total.

In September 2020, Dean announced that he had signed a deal with Spotify, and that all future Happy Hour episodes would only be available on the platform with occasional snippets uploaded to YouTube.[14]

In March 2021, Knox became a regular host on JaackMaate's Happy Hour.[15]

Controversy[edit]

Personal life[edit]

In 2018, Dean proposed to his girlfriend Fiona South on Christmas Day.[18]

Dean is a critic of cancel culture, particularly in the space of YouTube, and sometimes Twitter. When commenting on it within a video, Dean stated 'People grow, people learn and people and change' whilst also highlighting the hypocrisy of mob culture with 'if you’re going to constantly punish people for old opinions then you better fucking hope that you've never said anything even slightly dodgy'.[19] Dean also has OCD, which particularly focuses on health anxiety.[20]
