Jackson Walker L.L.P. is a Texas-based law firm with offices in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Angelo, San Antonio, and Texarkana[1]. Founded in 1887, the firm has more than 400 attorneys with a focus on bankruptcy, energy, environment, corporate/mergers & acquisitions, healthcare, labor & employment, and general commercial litigation[2].

History[edit]

Jackson Walker was established in 1887 when W.J.J. Smith started his law practice in Dallas. In the 1890s, Smith entered into a partnership with brothers John and George Robertson forming the firm Smith, Robertson & Robertson. Together, the brothers and Smith assisted in the formation of The Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas County Gas Company (later known as TXU Energy), as well as other businesses within Dallas.[3].

In 1948, Paul Jackson and his protégé Sam Winstead left Thompson, Knight, Wright, and Simmons to join the firm, which became known as Robertson, Jackson, Payne and Lancaster. At about the same time, A.W. Walker, Jr., a professor at the University of Texas School of Law, left teaching to join the firm as a name partner. With the addition of Jackson and Walker, the firm, now called Robertson, Jackson, Payne, Lancaster and Walker, became a full-service law firm with particular expertise in tax and oil and gas matters[3].

In June 1988, the firm's name was changed to Jackson & Walker, and later simply Jackson Walker L.L.P..
