Jacob Matthew Thompson (born August 8, 1989) is a professional baseball pitcher for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
He was born in Downey, California. Prior to playing professionally, he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and then California State University, Long Beach, where he pitched from 2008 to 2010. In 2008, he went 2-5 with a 4.95 ERA in 13 starts. In 2009, he was 4-7 with a 5.61 mark in 14 starts (he also played for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League that year) and in 2010, he was 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA in 14 starts.[1] The Tampa Bay Rays drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, two picks ahead of pitcher Drew Smyly and four ahead of shortstop Andrelton Simmons,[2] and he began his professional career that year. He was signed by scout Robbie Moen.
His first pro season, split between the Hudson Valley Renegades and Charlotte Stone Crabs, he was 4-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 12 games (9 starts). Baseball America named him the second-best prospect in the New York–Penn League. He was named the 10th-best prospect in the Tampa Bay's system prior to the 2011 campaign by Baseball America and went 5-7 with a 2.90 ERA in 22 starts for Charlotte that season. He pitched for the Montgomery Biscuits in 2012 and went 7-12 with a 5.56 ERA in 25 starts. In 2013, again with Montgomery, he was 11-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 148 2/3 innings. Thompson moved to the bullpen for 2014, making 34 appearances between Montgomery and the Triple-A Durham Bulls, going a combined 5-1 with a 2.79 ERA. He spent all of 2015 on the disabled list. On July 8, the Rays released him and on July 17, the Pirates signed him. He was assigned to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians and was activated on September 24.[3][4] The Pirates released Thompson on March 28, 2016.
On April 5, 2016, signed with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
