James A. Janisse is an American internet personality, host, actor, and creator of the popular YouTube channel Dead Meat. Janisse is best known for the creation of the Kill Count series, in which he summarizes horror films and tallies the number of deaths in them, all the while giving in-depth background information into the production of the films.
Early life
James Anthony Janisse was born to Jim and Cynthia Janisse on May 6th, 1989. He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, alongside his sister Janelle. James had an interest in editing from a very young age and began to teach himself how to use different programs to create short videos and sketches, which he would continue doing throughout high school and college.[1]
He went on to attend the University of Michigan, where he received a Bachelor's in Screen Arts and Cultures. While in college, he would meet and begin dating Chelsea Rebecca, whom he would eventually marry. Chelsea would also become a co-runner of his YouTube channels.[citation needed]
Early career
After graduating, James moved to Los Angeles, California in 2012.[2] He briefly attempted to start an acting career but would go on to work as an editor for Fullscreen (company). While there, he further honed his editing skills and worked on several high-profile television series like The Simpsons, The Last Man on Earth (TV series), and Lucifer (TV series). In 2010 James, and his friends Chelsea Rebecca, James Graessle, and David Devries, began a YouTube channel called Comediocracy. After finding some success but being unable to monetize their content, they created a new channel by the name of Practical Folks. The group created sketches, parodies of popular media like Game of Thrones, and gave comedic commentary over films.[citation needed]
The most popular series on the Practical Folks Channel was Drunk Disney, where James, Chelsea, David, and various guests would watch classic Disney films while doing different drinking challenges and telling jokes. They were joined by several other well-known internet personalities and comedians like Jon Cozart, Tessa Netting, and more. The group began to focus on other projects and at this point the Practical Folks channel has been inactive since 2019.[citation needed]
Dead Meat
On April 7th, 2016, James launched the YouTube channel Dead Meat. The first video posted was a kill count of the original Friday the 13th movie, the beginning of his Kill Count series. At the beginning of the series, he would summarize the plot of the films on more of a service level and tally the number of deaths in the movie; however, as the series went on, it began to include more in-depth analysis of the films he was covering. The series covered major horror franchises like Scream and Child's Play while also spotlighting lesser-known horror movies like Ice Cream Man. The Kill Count series initially only featured James but would eventually begin featuring other members of the Kill Count team like Chelsea, their beloved cat Lucy, and Zoran Gvojic.[citation needed]
In February of 2018 Chelsea Rebecca, co-runner of Dead Meat and romantic partner of James, launched the Dead Meat Podcast. The Podcast features Chelsea and James providing various film critique, discussion, and commentary. The Podcast also dives deeply into horror-related topics outside of film, covering topics that range from haunted house attractions, the history of South Sudan, and playing games that Chelsea designs herself.[citation needed]
Personal life and other work
In 2018, James hosted a series for Crypt TV called Meat Up where he would interview titans within the horror community about their time in the industry and, if they thought they could actually survive some of the iconic horror scenes they'd been a part of.[citation needed] He also acted in the Crypt TV series The Look-See, where he played a thief named Raymond.[citation needed] James also made minor appearances in music videos for Ice Nine Kills' song "Funeral Derangements"[3] and the Common Shiner (band) song "Social Mediasochist".[citation needed]
On January 21st, 2022, after two postponements due to COVID, James and Chelsea were married in Los Angeles, California. The duo was married by friend and actress Heather Langenkamp, best known for her role as Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street.[citation needed] Also in January of 2022, both James and Chelsea were featured in Scream (2022 film) where they played film critics who mocked the latest film in the infamous Stab series.[4]
