James E. Mumford (June 25, 1936 - April 12, 2019)[1] was a Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, having been Director of the African American Chorale Ensemble from 1983-2006.[2][3]

Early life and career[edit]

Mumford was born in Kinston, North Carolina. His mother was a domestic worker, while his father ran Dunn Hotel, the first hotel in North Carolina for African Americans, and was the richest Black man in town.[4] Along with his twin brother, Mumford was babysat by his aunt, a schoolteacher, at the single room schoolhouse at which she taught. Having grown up near his teaching aunt, Mumford was able to skip several grades. While he had sang some in church, Mumford didn't decide to go into music until his junior year of high school, when his music teacher gave him an individual background in music theory.[5]

Mumford entered Virginia State University at the age of 15.[5] He majored in music, against his father's wishes, resulting in his father not funding his education. He graduated college at the age of 19, having become the youngest Omega Psi Phi fraternity member of all time.[4]

After graduation, Mumford began teaching at a high school in Centreville, Maryland, where students, at times, were older than him.[4] He later began teaching at Camden High School in Camden, New Jersey, directing the school choir.[5]
