Jamia Lutfia Anwarul Uloom Hamid Nogor (Bengali: জামিয়া লুৎফিয়া আনওয়ারুল উলূম হামিদনগর, Arabic: ﺍﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ ﺍﻟﻠﻄﻔﻴﺔ أنوار العلوم حميدنغر‎), also known as Boruna Madrasah (Bengali: বরুণা মাদ্রাসা, Arabic: برونا مدرسة‎), is one of the oldest and most renowned Qawmi Madrasahs in Bangladesh.[1] Combined with the adjoining Masjid Abu Bakr and other facilities, it has the largest mosque, orphanage and Islamic university in the Sylhet region. The mosque can hold up to 7,000 worshippers.[2]

It is located in Boruna, Hamidnagar, Srimangal, Moulvibazar District, Bangladesh.[3]

History[edit]

It was established in 1941 by Shaykh Lutfur Rahman (Alom) Bornobhi, a student of Hussain Ahmed Madani at the Darul Uloom Deoband. It started out running maktabs and eventually expanded from there.[4] The Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh has rated it as the best madrasah in the Sylhet Division for every year since 2009.[4] The institution hosts an annual event known as the Islami Mohashommelon Salana Ijlas which attracts people from all over the country as well as from India and the United Kingdom. Guest speakers from the past have included Imam Qasim Rashid Ahmad and the sons of Hussain Ahmed Madani.[2] Its monthly magazine "Hefazat-e-Islam" in the Bengali language, has also gained some recognition.[5] The Bangladesh Online Activist Forum held an event in Moulvibazar in early November 2019 inviting the staff of the madrasah to give speeches. In March 2020, there was a protest in Srimangal opposing the North East Delhi riots.[6]

Departments and levels[edit]

There are 1500 students at present acquiring religious and worldly knowledge with full care and attention and 55 well qualified teachers who teach and monitor student progress. The Jamiah is progressing day by day The Madrasah offers Islamic education from maktab (primary level) up to the highest degree Takmil Fil Hadith classes. Other facilities[edit]

It has the largest orphanage in the Sylhet Division and has a free medical centre and four ambulances. Qurbani services are available at the institution for Eid al-Adha. It also provides language courses in Bengali, English and Arabic as well as courses relating to technical and vocational studies.[2] In addition to this, optional extracurricular activities include lessons on tailoring, information and communications technology, driving and agriculture.[4]
