Jan Gezinyus Dunning (born 5 December 1959) is a Dutch entrepreneur. President and CEO at Magnit PJSC.

Biography[edit]

Jan Dunning was born in Groningen. He graduated from The University of Groningen in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in Modern History. In 1989, he took his MBA at The University of Amsterdam.[1]

In 1989, he started his career in retail trade. Dunning got his first job in the German company Aldi Retail in the Netherlands. From 1994 until 2000, he worked as Sales and Development Director for Aldi Retail. His next job was the position of General Director at Lucas Klamer trading company, a subsidiary of Metro Group.[1]

In 2003, Dunning became Sales Director in the Russian division of Metro Cash & Carry, where he also later worked as Chief Operating Officer.[2] For a certain time, Dunning was the head of Ukrainian division of Metro Cash & Carry.[1]

In 2009, he became CEO of Lenta retail chain.[3] His coming to work in Lenta was connected with the end of a nearly two year corporate conflict between the two company’s shareholders — August Meyer and Oleg Zherebtsov, who were both insisting on the right to appoint their own CEOs.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

In 2013, he entered the Board of Directors of Lenta. In February 2014, Dunning’s term in the office as Lenta CEO was extended for another five years.[12] In the end of 2018, it became known that Dunning was leaving Lenta.[13]

In January 2019, Dunning became President of Magnit and also Member of its Board of Directors.[14][15]
