"Jananya", is a Indi-pop song by Indian Director Anand Anilkumar, released in 2020. It was the first Indian music video to explore the effects of Postpartum depression.

The song and the video were widely covered by the media.

Background[edit]

The first independent project of director, Anand Anilkumar, Jananya depicts the struggles that a new mother goes through and shows how she overcomes it through professional and personal help.

The Music for the song was produced by Pratik Abhyankar and the lyrics were penned by Din Nath Puthenchery. The vocals for the song were lent by Gouri Sreekumar and Gireesan A.C. Cinematographer Raam H. Puthran captured the visuals for the Music Video.

It was produced by CIMAR Group's MOM Premium Women's Hopsital.

Release[edit]

The music video was released on YouTube by Manorama Music Songs on February 14, 2020. It was simultaneously launched by popular Malayalam movie actress, Manju Warrier, on her Facebook profile.

As of January 1, 2022, the music video has received over 500,000 views on the Manorama Music Songs channel at YouTube..[1]

The song and the music video were an instant hit and was widely covered by the media. Saraswathy Nagarajan in The Hindu comments "‘Jananya’ sensitively depicts the overwhelming feeling of helplessness and despondency that some mothers have to overcome to enjoy motherhood"[2]. "1 in 7 moms has postpartum depression: Malayalam music video explores struggle" writes Cris in The News Minute[3]. Sumitra Nair of The Week calls out, "This scene might be from a recent music video, Jananya that has generated much noise around the issue of postpartum depression, but thousands of women resonate with it."[4]
