Jatinder Hayre is a campaigner, academic and medical student. He is known for his political and health journalism as well as academic publications on health inequalities.

Research interests[edit]

Hayre has an acute interest in health inequalities. Notably, he has written for the BMJ detailing the intersection between obesity and poverty in the UK.[1] He also devised policy with The Fabian Society think tank, calling on a universal 10% Government subsidy on fruit and vegetables, and a further voucher scheme for those in the lowest socioeconomic gradient.[2][3] Additionally, he has championed the NHS social prescribing scheme[4].

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Hayre has also outlined the need for better financial provision to people who are out self-isolating.[5] He has been critical of the outsourcing of essential public services to tackle the COVID-19 crisis, particularly the Test and Trace system operated by Serco.[6]

Hayre was commissioned by the Independent SAGE to co-author 'SAGE Report 21: COVID-19 and Health Inequality'.[7][8] The report marked a pivotal moment in changing the national dialogue to focussing on the health inequalities across society and the interaction with the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also outlined policy recommendations to ease the burden of the pandemic on the most vulnerable.

Political activity[edit]

Hayre campaigns against the privatisation of the NHS. He is a spokesperson for Keep Our NHS Public,[9][10] and in March 2021 provided a testimony for the People's Covid Inquiry on the treatment of staff and students in the NHS through the pandemic.[11]

As of January 2021, Hayre sits on the Young Fabians Health Network Executive Committee[12]. As part of The Fabian Society think tank he has investigated the effects of the pandemic on the social determinants of child health and the effects on the reproductive rights of women globally and in the UK.[13]

Hayre was a panelist on Claim The Future, hosted by John McDonnell, focussing on the Government's outsourcing agenda throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic. He states outsourcing to be a key reason for the UK's excess death toll. He mentions "[on the track and trace system] world beating is what the Government promised, a beating from the rest of the world we got".[14][15]

Hayre set up the East Midlands Branch of the Socialist Health Association, and was elected as delegate to the central council.

He is a long time member and activist for the Labour Party.[citation needed]

Journalism[edit]

Hayre has written for The Independent. His most recent work focussing on NHS privatisation in the UK-US trade agreement garnered significant interest. It was ranked as the best opinion piece in British and International media by The Week magazine.[16]

He has also undertaken investigative journalism for Metro newspaper, outlining the lack of support for employees self-isolating.[17]

Hayre is also involved in the campaign against the takeover of the largest GP network in the UK by the corporation Centene.[18] Centene operates under the UK subsidiary, Operose Health.[19] This has far reaching implications for patient care.[20] Hayre has written about this in BJGP Life and is currently involved in the campaign to prevent the corporate takeover.[21]
