He is mostly known for his science achievements, having worked in many physics and astrophysics projects involving NASA and the Arecibo Radio Telescope.[citation needed] He is also the author of the children’s science series “Learning Spanish with the Solar System” (Aprendiendo Inglés con el Sistema Solar and “The Solar System for Kids”. He is also known for being the first XCC Welterweight Champion[citation needed] and his multiple demonstration of Kickboxing and Aikido around the world. He was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of fame in 2013 and the National Hall of Honors in 2016 amongst others.[citation needed]
He was involved in a mayor controversial issue. After winning multiple full contact tournaments in the towns of Arecibo, Hatillo and Camuy in Puerto Rico during the 90’s he participated in the first full contact MMA tournament in Camuy Puerto Rico sponsored by the then mayor of Camuy Rosales Perez and the Department of Recreation and Sports of Puerto Rico. William Rosales Perez, was the same person that presented Jerez with the 1st place trophy in the “Batalla de Campeones” kickboxing tournament in 1999 and the person that made possible that the first full contact, now known as MMA, tournament in Camuy could be held. The event created by X-tream Cage Championship (XCC) and the Department of Recreation and Sports was the first and last MMA like tournament held in town. At the time the evolution of MMA was slowly in progress and was banned in Puerto Rico. Once the event was held the mayor received a lot of complain letters and criticism for hosting such a brutal event and Jerez was stripped of the title and XCC was disbanded. A former lawsuit was presented but due to the fact that MMA was illegal at the time it was quickly removed.
