Joseph Ikwan Ejim known professionally as Jay Ikwan pronounced Jay Iquan is a Nigerian singer, songwriter , rapper , entrepreneur and licensed Christian minister.[1] He is best known for eclectic contemporary styles of music and his Christian ministry.

Early Years[edit | edit source]

Jay Ikwan was born in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria to Prince Ikwan Ejim Akuma & Princess Chinyere Ikwan Ejim ( nee Patience Tamunoprinye Nne Cookey-Gam ). His origin is from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. He is a descendant of His Royal Majesty Eze. Chukwu Oke Ukpabi, the first King and founder of Amogudu, Abiriba.

He attended Living Word Academy, All Saints Secondary School, Evangel Seminary in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. Jay's interest in music began as a teenager. After he was sent to live with his uncle at Eagle Island in Port Harcourt, During this time, He discovered his songwriting skill. He is a self-taught drummer, pianist and guitarist. In 2006, he partnered with an independent production group and hip-hop label Blackworld Records to release an EP called "Kronikles". After serving as music director and worship pastor at Transfiguration Church & Gospel Light House Community Church in Aba, Abia State, Ikwan started The Refiner's House International.

Jay Ikwan was licensed in 2007 as a Christian Minister and served as a Lead Pastor and church planter before relocating to the United Kingdom. He has been actively involved in information technology, media and christian ministry for over a decade.

Music Career[edit | edit source]

Jay started out as a bass guitar player in 1999 but couldnt play for too long due to having "soft fingers". This caused blisters and he moved on to playing the Piano and the drums which he perfected.

Jay's interest in being a singer/rapper began as a teenager. He got into trouble after disarming an opposition during a fight. This resulted in the opposition being hurt and out of fear of revenge, he moved out of the city of Aba to his Uncle's house at Eagle Island in Port Harcourt, During this time, He discovered his songwriting skill. He is a self-taught drummer, pianist and guitarist. In 2006, he partnered with an independent production group and hip-hop label Blackworld Records to release an EP called , Kronikles . After serving as music director at Transfiguration Church & Gospel Light House in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria, Ikwan started The Refiner's House International and served as its leader for years before moving to The United Kingdom.

Jay Ikwan was licensed in 2007 as a Christian Minister.

Jay moved to Southampton, United Kingdom in 2015 where he is currently based. The second EP, The Awakening, was released on December 22, 2017. Jay has also released a mix-tape, "Stronger" following the the single "Olla Dem"] In 2018, Jay gained national recognition in the United Kingdom after the release of his single "Skittish" which is the lead single off his 2018 mixtape "Crucified For The Truth".

He has since transformed his love for the songwriting into a full-fledged hip-hop career. Jay’s early recordings include “Stunning Lady”, “Hip Dance” all from the Kronikles Album. In July 2018, he dropped the viral hit “Skittish”. This song became a local hit in his city of Southampton, United Kingdom and went on to give him recognition on a national scale. He was co-signed by London-based broadcaster & songwriter, Tom Robinson of BBC Radio 6 whose best songs are 2-4-6-8 Motorway, Glad To be Gay and War Baby. Tom Robinson has also co-written songs with Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Dan Hartman and Manu Katche.

In Tom's exact words " Jay Ikwan has a flow that is so smooth that I find the song "SKITTISH" irresistible !” "

After this co-sign, Jay Ikwan appeared on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape 23 July 2018.
