Jordan Ray Mehciz (born December 25, 2000), better known by his stage name Jay Kartel, is an American rapper, songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur from New York City. He is best known for his music career and has cited several influential artists including J. Cole, Jay-Z, Nipsey Hussle, Dave East, Drake, Tory Lanez, and more.
Early Life and Education:
Jordan Ray Mehciz was born in the Bronx, NY to a Trinidadian mother and a Surinamese father. He grew up in the Bronx, Harlem, and Mount Vernon areas of New York until he moved to California from 2010 to 2012. Kartel returned to New York and attended Mount Saint Michael Academy (Alma Mater of Sean Combs, Walter Murphy, and Leon Robinson) in Bronx, NY, and later attended Democracy Prep Charter High School in Harlem, NY, where he played JV and Varsity Basketball. After graduation, he attended Wake Forest University to play Division I basketball until his collegiate basketball career was cut short. This experience allowed him to focus on his music career as an artist.
Career:
Jay Kartel's interest in music came from his father, who was a disc jockey, drummer, and singer. He began his career as a DJ at the age of 10, playing at various notable venues such as SOBs NY, Hot 97, and other colleges and nightclubs. He later transitioned to rapping, singing, and acting.
Kartel has released several music works, including his debut single "Lost Ones" in 2019, "Vibe With Me" in 2021, and "New School" in 2022. His music often reflects his experiences growing up in New York City, and he has become known for his lyrical ability and storytelling.
In addition to his music career, Kartel has also pursued acting. He has appeared in several short films, including "The Season of Love's Perfection" and "Undefeated: The Russ Smith Story."
Personal Life:
Kartel's interest in music was nurtured by his father, who was a musician. As a child, he also played basketball and had a successful career in high school, earning over 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. He has also been involved in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) with multiple basketball programs.
Kartel also experienced some trouble in the New York school system, leading to his mother’s decision to relocate him to California in 2010. Aside from continuing his basketball career, Kartel began his acting career training under Margie Haber (who has taught actors Brad Pitt, Tiffany Haddish, Halle Berry, Madelaine Petsch, Vince Vaughn, Owen Teague, Storm Reid, Kyle Chandler and more)
