Jayefunk' (born June 20, 1991), known professionally as Jaye, is a Singapore singer. His 2019 song "TOMORROW" has over 1 million views on YouTube.
Early life
jayefunk is one of the most popular names in the Singapore music industry. He has been at the top of his game. Having music as his favorite childhood hobby, he began his own business by DJing at several private parties at the age of 15. His real name is Foo Jian Chuan and he produced his first album when was 16. Till today, the musician has performed at many global events like the Singapore Night Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, and the Starbucks Tour. With being a DJ in an X-Factor finalist group, Jayefunk’s songs have featured on many international channels like MTV, Radio and have been topping the charts on Apple Music and Spotify Viral 50 Charts.[1]
He was previously known as ‘THE AZN SEN$ATON’ and his debut single ‘Suprememan’ was #16 on Spotify’s Singapore Viral 50 Charts. The single also aired on Beats1 Radio and featured on Apple’s The New Asia International playlist. In 2016, he secured the National Business Award (Music) by the Singapore Review Magazine. His achievements continued when jayefunk was seen on the covers of The Straits Times and the Huffington Posts. TOMORROW
In order to cope with life, Jaye thinks about death every day. The Singaporean musician takes the practice from a Bhutan tradition, though he has his own reasons for such meditation. His debut single, “TOMORROW,” embodies an optimistic gloom about his current life and all the choices that led him to today.
jaye fell into a spiral when he realized his life wouldn’t play out the way it was “supposed to.” As an only child in his culture, he is expected to care for his parents in their old age. At the same time, his wife’s happiness in their life together is paramount, but they knew that if they were to truly start their life together, they could no longer live with Jaye's parents. So he made the painful choice to move out.
The decision came when he penned “TOMORROW,” with tears streaming down his face and the prospect of abandoning his mother weighing heavily on him. Depression and guilt enveloped Jaye, triggering memories of his darkest moments, all of which fuel the track. Pursuing success feels a lot like chasing a high. jaye is familiar with the rush; as a DJ, he partied as much as he could, hustling in his career while abusing alcohol for literal intoxication. But nightlife exhausted him. The limited return that came from those sleepless nights only fueled the pain that tormented him between gigs. The cycle that inspired jaye’s latest single was dubbed “ADHD”: Attention, Depression, Hit, and Dip.
“ADHD” stands out thanks to the skills that jaye has mastered over the course of his career, most notably his instinct for rhythm and production. He was inspired by Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to experiment with the structure of the song as well as the music video. It all starts with Attention, marked by pills and fearlessness. Then Depression hits, deflating the energy from what could have been a smooth club hit as he sings nearly a cappella about being chained to his pain. A Hit takes us back—jaye raps with a controlled flow, fighting 8-bit enemies in his own personal side-scrolling hellscape. The initial production returns for the final stage, as jaye longs to get out of the situation and Dip. Eventually he does escape, into a void that provides no additional reassurance. jaye came up with the inventive music video for “ADHD,” which allows users to choose their own fate while living experiences that were adapted from jaye’s own memories. The first chapter ends with two options and from there the viewer controls the narrative, or at least that’s what they think. The video is a clever representation of the viciousness of the “ADHD” cycle; viewers will feel the same burden that jaye did as he realized that partying did not empower him but in fact hindered his mental health, and life.
This track comes after the success of previous singles, “DEJAVU” and “TOMORROW,” which both received over half a million views after just one month. The latter was also nominated for Vibe of the Year at The Youth Music Awards. jayefunk lives in Singapore. He is married to Nicholette Pang since 2017. jaye is more myth than man, who incorporates real experiences into his music. After his start in Singapore, he moved to the UK to become a DJ for an X-Factor finalist where his pursuit of success fed his vices. He only narrowly escaped his demons after returning home, thanks to his wife. jaye then began performing comedy raps as the AZN SEN$ATION, which placed him on the viral charts.
