Jayne Owen Bruner is considered one of the most successful female masters swimmers in the world.[2][3]
She lives in Reston, Virginia, United States, and is a member of the DC Masters team.[3]
At the age of 21, she joined the Riviera Club team in Indianapolis and took part in the national championships, but only for a few years. When the team disbanded, she gave up the sport. She only took up swimming again at the age of 39, encouraged by her husband Bob in 1973.[2][4] Coached over time by Jan Smith, Bob Clemmer, Mark Davin and Steve Ercolano, she spent 24 years on the Team Pittsburgh Aquatics team, then joined the Curl-Burke Swim Team, competing with the DC Masters Team.[4]
She competed in her first national competitions in 1974, then participated and won numerous world championships organised by FINA,[5][3] achieving a total of 40 world records.[6] Her last national record was set on August 18, 2001, at the age of 67, with the 50 breaststroke in a long pool (45"22).[7]
USMS Athletes considers Bruner to be one of the most successful female masters swimmers in the world for over 16 years.[2][3]
