Biography[edit]

Jean Baptiste Fauvelet (June 9, 1819 - March 14, 1883) was a notable French painter and lithographer known for his precise and confident draughtsmanship. Born in Bordeaux, he studied art under Pierre Lacour and later Ernest Meissonier, eventually becoming a professor of painting at the Collège de Chartres.

Fauvelet had his artistic debut at the 1845 Paris Salon, marking the start of his consistent presence at the Salon until 1870. He was awarded a 2nd class medal in the 1848 Salon. His work mainly focused on still life and domestic scenes, often reminiscent of Meissonier's style.

Fauvelet's work is characterized by a meticulous stroke and delicate chromatic nuances. His exceptional draughtsmanship complemented the intricate details of his pieces, typical of academy painters of his time.

He was struck by paralysis in 1870, rendering him unable to continue working. His previously unsold creations were eventually auctioned in 1875.
