Henri Morisset Chevalier (6 April 1870 - 15 November 1956) was a French Painter and husband of the famous spiritual guru, Mirra Alfassa.
Biography[edit]
Henri Morisset is the first child of the famous French portrait artist, Henri Georges Caïus Morisset and Marie Magdeleine Naudet . He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1890 where he was a pupil of Jules-Elie Delaunay, then of Gustave Moreau. The latter made him study Dutch art at the Louvre Museum. Morisset was made a Medalist at the Salon of French Artists in 1893 and one of his paintings, Des Amis, was acquired by the State in 1896.
In 1898, he left the Salon of French Artists to move to that of the National Society of Fine Arts. In 1901, he was elected a member and the State purchased La Lecture for the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.
He made large decorative compositions on the life of Saint Jacques The Great for the church of Saint-Jacques in Pau, a large decoration on Jacques Cartier for the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Rocamadour in 1921 in the church of Saint-François d 'Assise de Québec (Canada), a Pieta for the Chapel of the Dead in the church of Saint-Rémy in Dieppe, a series of decorative panels on the tales of Perrault. He painted portraits of the poet Paul Delair, the pianist Raoul Pugno (at the Maison Pleyel), Vincent d'Indy (at the Schola Cantorum, 269, Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, Coquelin the elder in the last painting by Cyrano, and more.
Henri Morisset also painted paintings with naked people, one of which earned him a gold medal in Munich. Several are acquired by the French State. His production also includes seascapes, still lifes of flowers and landscapes. A Maternity is preserved at the Eugène-Boudin museum in Honfleur, a Guignol des Champs-Élysées at the town hall of Clichy, La Capucine at Cartwright Hall (en) in Bradford (United Kingdom), Pépère, dedicated to his territorial comrades of the First World War II, is acquired by the City of Paris for the Petit Palais.
Henri Morisset is a member of the Salon d'Automne, member of the committee of the National Society of Fine Arts, co-founder, with Albert Besnard, of the Salon des Tuileries. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1912.
