Jeff Schumann is an American entrepreneur and business executive who served as co-founder and CEO of the Columbus, Ohio-based artificial intelligence collaboration security platform Aware until its acquisition by cyber security firm Mimecast for an undisclosed sum in 2024. Following the sale, Schumann became VP of branding and AI strategy at Mimecast.
Career and entrepreneurship
Schumann attended Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, where he graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a concentration in management information systems.[1]
Following a corporate career that included roles at JP Morgan and Nationwide, Schumann founded Aware in Columbus, Ohio in 2017. Schumann and his co-founders conceived of Aware to manage collaboration data across popular business collaboration software platforms, such as Zoom, Slack, Microsoft Teams, as well as email. Aware aims to enhance the security of the digital workplace and protect intellectual property.[2]
Schumann has written publicly about the security risks that have emerged with the rise of these collaborative tools, arguing in Forbes that the Uber data breaches illustrate both the difficulty and importance of protecting against cyber vulnerabilities when a company’s data becomes dispersed across numerous applications.[3][4]
During his tenure, Aware raised $100 million from outside investors that included Goldman Sachs, Ohio Innovation Fund, and JobsOhio.[5][2] In August 2024, the acquisition of Aware by Mimecast was announced. Following the acquisition, Aware’s operations remained in Columbus, Ohio.[2][6][7]
As of 2026, Schumann is described as VP of branding and AI strategy at Mimecast.[8][9]
