Jefferson Middle School is a public middle school located in central Columbia, Missouri. The school serves grades 6 through 8 and is one of six Middle Schools in Columbia Public Schools. It is next to the main campus of Columbia College.[4][5]

History[edit]

This property had continuously held a school since 1881, when Columbia Public School, a four room elementary school opened here. In 1900, Columbia High School was founded here. It moved into the current building in 1911.[6] This building was the first in the district to have a gymnasium.[7] It became Jefferson Jr High School in 1927 when Hickman High School opened[6]. By that point, there were so many students they had to have two half day sessions[8]. As a Jr High school, the school held 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The old Jefferson building (the original high school) was left unused and demolished in the 30's. The school was expanded in 1935 and again in 1955 to add what is now the auditorium, media center, office, cafeteria, and fine arts rooms. In 1954, Columbia Public Schools ended racial segregation. Jefferson became integrated and was open to black students, who formerly had to go to Douglas High School. There was very little racial mixing in the schools, despite the ending of segregation. Jefferson only had six black students in the 1954-1955 school year. The school board didn't take many steps to further integrate the schools. There were only 21 black students attending Jefferson in 1958. In 1957, a special education program was established for those in the higher grades. There was already one for elementary schools at West Boulevard Elementary School. School enrollment boomed in the 50's and 60's, and Jefferson had a hard time handling all the students. In order to make more room, West Jr High School (now a middle school) opened in 1962. Oakland Jr High opened in 1971[7]. In 1994, '95, and '97, three new schools opened, Gentry, Smithton, and Lange to deal with overcrowding. These schools were middle schools, and they taught 6th and 7th grade, letting the Jr Highs teach only 8th and 9th grade. This lasted until 2013, when Battle High School opened and moved 9th grade to High School[9]. Jefferson Jr High was now Jefferson Middle School. In 2003, the school was designated a notable historic property[6]. In 2004, an addition was added on, including 7th and 8th grade science rooms, a guidance office, and an industrial tech room. In 2013 Jefferson Junior was converted to today's Jefferson Middle School.[10] The school received air conditioning in 2014.[11]
