The School of International Studies (SIS) is located at the Stockton, California campus of the University of the Pacific (UOP). It hosts an undergraduate program in international studies that promotes an international, interdisciplinary, and intercultural immersion in several academic fields. It is one of a handful of undergraduate schools of international studies in the United States.

History[edit]

The School of International Studies was established in 1987, growing out of two cluster colleges, Callison and Elbert Covell. Elbert Covell College had opened in 1963 with the aims of attracting Latin American students with a program taught only in Spanish, the first in the United States.[1] Callison College, established in 1966, required students to earn an interdisciplinary concentration in Far Eastern studies. Students were also required to study abroad in Asia for a full year, with partner colleges in India and Japan.[1] Student enrolled waned over time, and the cluster college system fell apart. The Academic Council allowed for the establishment of the School of International Studies in the wake of the cluster colleges. Upon its establishment, the School of International Studies had 104 students.[1]

Academics[edit]

The School of International Studies offers an interdisciplinary education in global and international studies. The undergraduate program has students take courses in political science, anthropology, economics, history, geography, and modern foreign languages. The B.A. program requires that students study abroad for at least one semester, with cross-cultural classes required before and after going abroad. SIS graduates pursue careers in a variety of fields, including international businesses, government agencies, academe, and non-governmental organizations.

Model United Nations[edit]

There are also experiential learning opportunities, like the Model United Nations (Model UN) program, for students to participate in. The University of the Pacific’s mission for the Model UN team is to "advance understanding of the UN System and contemporary global issues through quality experiential learning programs that emphasize collaborative conflict resolution and prepare participants for active global citizenship."[2]

Study Abroad[edit]

Students are required to study abroad for at least one semester in a country of their choice. Previously during the time of Callison College, students were required to study abroad in non-European countries, with partner institutions in India and Japan.[1] UOP has partner universities in Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Sweden with exchange student programs.[3] UOP also works with four approved study abroad providers: CIEE, IES, ISEP, and USAC.[3]

Student organizations[edit]

The School of International Studies has a couple student organizations focused on international topics:

  • Open Assembly for the School of International Studies (OASIS)
  • United Nations Association (UNA) - UOP Chapter
