Jennifer Steinman

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jennifer Steinman Sternin is a documentary filmmaker and the founder of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Film Fatales, a community of women feature film and television directors. Steinman started her career as an editor at CBS in New York and San Francisco. Her work appeared on ABC, CBS, PBS, Discovery, National Geographic and the Sundance Channel.[1][2]  Her films have been selected for the Tribeca Film Festival,[3] Rome Independent Film Festival,[4] International Film Festival Rotterdam, Sundance Film Festival, and SXSW.

Biography[edit]

Jennifer Steinman was born in Berkeley, California and attended Berkeley High School, graduating in 1980.[5] She graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor's degree in the Visual Arts, with a minor in Women's Studies. At age 39, Steinman chose to become a single mother, giving birth to a daughter in 2012. The relationship between her choices in filmmaking and her decision to become a single mother are documented in a Ted Talk Steinman gave in 2014.[6] When her daughter was 14 months old, Steinman met Richard Sternin, whom she married in 2015.[7]

Jennifer is a niece of renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.[8]

Career[edit]

After graduating from film school, Steinman started her career as an Editor. She had a successful career in news editing and later as a commercial editor working with national healthcare brands for 20 years before she directed her first documentary.[9] Steinman credits her extensive career as an Editor for influencing the way she shoots documentaries. She is always 'editing in her head'[10] while she is shooting which she feels helps her when making shooting choices on the fly.

"I am all about story...what is the most emotional story...how is this character evolving."[10] While Steinman's subjects come from different parts of the world and are involved in different pursuits, there are recurring themes to her work: testing your limits, personal journeys, friendship and managing uncertainty. As she explained in an interview about Desert Runners, "The camaraderie and the suffering. When you are all in it together that allows you to push through in a way that I don't think you would be able to if you were out there by yourself." [10]

Another theme in Steinman's work is what she calls the space in between. "After you decide to start something, after the initial adrenaline and the excitement are gone, there is a massive amount of space in between where you have no idea how it is going to go, what is going to happen; how it is going to turn out. And that space is 99.99% of the experience. The beginning and the end are a very small piece of it. So learning how to be okay in the unknown is really what life is all about." [10]
