Jerome Johnson, is an American entrepreneur.[1] He harnesses solar power and lives off the grid. His home is the first New York City solar home in the City, in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. It is an energy efficient home model. He opened his home as a research center in the 1970s, and called it the Johnson Energy Clinic and Cooperative. Which was founded in 1979.[2]

Jerome Johnson purchased his home in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York in 1961. He lived in the house until the 1970s until the neighborhood experienced a rise in crime. He then turned the house into a workshop and research center. He called the house "John-Sun-House". The house is located at 436 East 53rd Street in Brooklyn, New York. He has no running water. He collects rainwater that is collected from his rooftop. He was motivated to create the Sun house due to the 1970s energy crises to start a community research center where innovations for Energy conservation can be used and discussed. He held community workshops during the 1970s energy crisis. The house is retrofitted to harness Solar energy. He founded the Johnson Solar Energy Cooperative in 1979[3]

In the 1950s Mr. Johnson designed and manufactured photography lighting equipment. Which were umbrella devices that diffused light. In the 1970s he became interested in Energy conservation. He turned his umbrella diffused lighting design into an umbrella food cooker. He calls it his Para-Broiler. [4]
