Jerome Precilla (born 6 January 1986) known professionally as Rome, is a Trinidadian TV and event host, radio personality, actor, songwriter and singer, mostly associated with Soca Parang genre.[2]

Early Life[edit]

Rome was born on 6 January 1986 in Arima, (East Trinidad) to his parents Anthony and Arlene Precilla and has 4 siblings. Rome attended Arima Boys’ RC primary school. At 7 years old, Rome would represent the school at poetry and verse speaking competitions and as a student Rome enjoyed creative writing. In secondary school at St Mary's College Rome hosted some of the school's events and entered school calypso (Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago) competitions, performing songs written by his sister Giselle. At the age of 15 Rome's father put a stop to most of his extra curricular activities, citing that he wanted Rome to focus on his upcoming CXC (Caribbean Examinations Council) exams. As a teenager Rome saw himself becoming a doctor, but set his sights on being an engineer instead, due to the competitive nature of the medical field.[3]

In 2008 he gained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of the West Indies (UWI) with Upper Second Class Honors and a Masters in Engineering Asset Management also from The University of the West Indies UWI in 2012. That same year, Rome landed a job at Petrotrin (state-owned oil company) as a Mechanical Engineer in where he worked for 10 years. During his tenure he was promoted to the Preventative Maintenance Superintendent position (head of the department) and was the youngest person to ever hold such a position at the company.

Early Career (Entertainment)[edit]

Rome got his first big break 2007 while attending University, when he came across and ad for a TV show host. The show titled Party Flava was a remake of a popular local 90s show, Party Time.

In 2010 while working at Petrotrin full-time, Rome started hosting live events and performing at clubs and parties, mainly on the weekends. Rome continued working in the entertainment industry part -time until 30 November 2019, when the company was closed by the Trinidadian government. [4]

As a new artist, Rome faced difficulty getting his songs played on the local radio stations. As a result, he decided to take it directly to his target audience. Rome performed at birthday parties and bars and created music videos which went viral on social media. This tactic eventually worked, gaining him popularity and a fan base. After losing his job at Petrotrin, Rome decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry refusing offers by other companies in the Energy Sector.

Competitions[edit]

Rome entered the Chutney Soca Monarch competition in 2018 with D Key Featuring Ravi B where he was a semifinalist. Rome was a finalist in The International Soca Monarch competition in 2018 with the same song, D Key. [5] In 2019 Rome teamed up with Veejai Ramkissoon on the song Bite Up, where they placed 4th in the Chutney Soca Monarch finals. Rome was successful yet again in 2020 at The International Soca Monarch competition, becoming a finalist in both the Groovy and Power categories. [6]
