Jerry Carl (born 1957 or 1958) is an American politician and businessman serving as a member of the Mobile County Commission. Carl is a candidate for Alabama's 1st congressional district in the 2020 election. Carl placed first in the Republican primary and will face the second-highest vote-earner, State Senator Bill Hightower, in the July 14, 2020 Republican runoff.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Carl graduated from Sylacauga High School in 1977. He attended Lake City Community College (now Florida Gateway College) before beginning his business career.[3][4]

Career[edit]

After leaving community college, Carl worked for Alabama Power. He then worked for the Burford Equipment Company and as a salesman for various companies in Mobile. Carl established Stat Medical, a healthcare equipment business, in 1989. He later worked as a manager at Rotech Medical before establishing a real estate development firm. Carl founded Carl and Associates, a management group, in 2003. He Cricket and Butterfly, LLC, lumber and timber company.

Carl ran for Mobile County Commission in 2012.[5] He defeated incumbent Mike Dean in the Republican Party primary election in April,[6] and was elected in the general election in November.[7] He won reelection against Margie Wilcox in 2016.[8] In 2019, Carl was selected to serve as Council President.[9] In 2019, Carl announced his candidacy for Alabama's 1st congressional district, being vacated by Bradley Byrne. Carl faced former State Senator Bill Hightower, Alabama House member Chris Pringle, and two others in the Republican primary. Carl narrowly defeated Hightower in the primary, and the two advanced to a Republican runoff scheduled for July 14, 2020.[10][11]

Personal life[edit]

Carl and his wife, Tina, have two children. Carl's son, Dallas, is a member of the United States Marine Corps.
