Jesse Benns is a British percussionist. He is best known for his work with Trevor Babajack Steger, The Hawthornes and Greg McDonald’s Glymjack. He is also a founding member of Thrown Together, and has recorded and played with Gerry Colvin.[1][2][3][4] He is an official artist of Meinl Percussion, signing an endorsement deal in 2023.[5]

Benns is particularly renowned for his energetic Cajón playing, with his fast-paced and driving style often being highlighted.[6]

Biography

Benns first started playing music professionally in 2013, forming Folk Rock band The Hawthornes.[7] In their near seven years together, the band released one EP, two full-length albums, and toured with acts such as The Hoosiers, The Phil Beer Band, Roving Crows, 3 Daft Monkeys and Terry & Gerry.[8][9][10] During this time Benns was made an official endorsed artist for the now-defunct Cornwall based Cajón brand Lion Cajóns, and also played several shows for Gerry Colvin, featuring on his album Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other.[11]

Following the breakup of The Hawthornes, Benns joined Cambridge-based Folk Rock band Glymjack (fronted by Greg McDonald) from 2019 to 2021, playing in their expanded lineup for numerous shows and festivals including Cambridge Folk Festival, New Forest Folk Festival, South Petherton Folk Festival, Lakefest and others.[12]

In 2022, Trevor Babajack Steger enlisted Benns and accomplished violinist Jo Chambers for The Trevor Babajack Trio, recording his third album Not Far To Go and touring extensively. This album was picked as Album of the Month in December 2022 by the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association and also reached number 2 in the British Blues Chart.[13][14]

In 2023, Trevor Babajack won The UK Blues Awards Best Acoustic Act of the Year, and released a live album as a duo with Benns entitled Bootleg Blues: Live at Temperance, entering the British Blues charts at number 21.[15][16] Around this time Benns also signed a deal to become an official endorsed artist for Meinl Percussion.[17]
