Jesse Dietschi is a Canadian jazz and classical bassist, composer, and educator[1]. He is the principal bassist with Sinfonia Toronto, and has numerous performing and recording credits on both upright and electric basses.

Biography

Born in Winnipeg, Dietschi is a graduate from Brandon University, where he studied both jazz performance and composition[2]. Upon relocating to Toronto in 2011, he completed graduate studies in jazz performance at the University of Toronto[3] and orchestral performance at the Glenn Gould School[4], studying with Andrew Downing and Jeffrey Beecher[5], respectively.

In 2019, Dietschi was named the Principal Bassist of the Juno award-winning[6] string orchestra Sinfonia Toronto[7]. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with orchestras and contemporary ensembles including the Canadian Opera Company[8], Esprit Orchestra, Niagara Symphony Orchestra, Luminato's Apocalypsis[9], Against the Grain Theatre, Edmonton Opera[10], and Soundstreams[11].

As a jazz musician, Dietschi has performed with artists like Russ Nolan[12], Richard Underhill[13], Jeremy Ledbetter[14], and Brownman Ali[15]. He is a member of the jazz ensembles Tunnel Six[16] and the Nick Maclean Quartet[17], and leads his own chamber jazz group the Catalyst Ensemble[18]. He has also performed internationally as a recitalist and soloist with full and string orchestras.[19][20][21][22]

As an electric bassist, Dietschi has performed with Irene Torres and the Sugar Devils[23], The Soulkicks[24], "Come From Away" co-writer David Hein, and Jeffrey Straker. He has recorded with The Headstones[25], Drew Jurecka[25], Ivana Popovic[26], The Sugar Devils[27], Sue and Dwight[28], and Tunnel Six[29], among others. He frequently performs in settings that blend jazz and classical elements, including during his residencies at genre bending/blending programs at the Banff Centre and Festival de Febrero. He has also appeared on national and international television broadcasts, including CBC's Sounds of the Season[30] and Murdoch Mysteries[31], as well as NBC's hit series Hannibal[31].

Dietschi continues to reside in Toronto, where he is an active freelance performer, composer[32], and educator[33].
