Jesse Gabriel is a Los Angeles County Commissioner and constitutional rights attorney who is currently a Democratic candidate for the California State Assembly to serve the 45th Assembly District. Gabriel is one of the candidates seeking to replace former Assemblymember Matt Dababneh in the 45th District Special Election. Gabriel works as an associate attorney for the law firm Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher, and he previously served as Counsel to Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Gabriel attended local public schools in Southern California. He later earned a B.A. in political science from University of California, Berkeley, where he served as president of the Associated Students of the University of California before graduating in 2004 with Highest Distinction in General Scholarship.[1] Gabriel graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2008, where he received the Dean’s Award for Community Leadership and served as Articles Editor of the Harvard Law & Policy Review.

Professional Career[edit]

Gabriel currently works for the law firm Gibson, Dun, & Crutcher, where he practices with the firm’s Litigation Department and its Public Policy Practice Group. On September 18, 2017, Gabriel filed a complaint on behalf of six young women and men challenging the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.[2][3]

Political Background and Working Experience[edit]

Prior to joining Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Gabriel served as Counsel to Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana. In that capacity, he was responsible for advising the Senator on a broad range of legal and policy issues, including the vetting and Senate confirmation of multiple executive branch and judicial nominees. Mr. Gabriel also helped draft the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act, key provisions of which were incorporated into the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act, which was signed into law in 2010.[4]

Gabriel currently serves on the Los Angeles County Commission on Local Governmental Services, and on the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. In partnership with state representatives, Gabriel worked to secure funding for non-profits facing hate crimes.

In January, 2018, Gabriel announced his candidacy to represent California's 45th State Assembly district, replacing Matt Dababneh, who resigned from the State Assembly following allegations of sexual harassment.[5]

Gabriel finished in first place in the April 3 special election primary, receiving 32.71% of votes cast and advancing to the June 5 runoff against Republican candidate Justin Clarke.[6][7]
