Jessikah Inaba is the first black female blind barrister in Britain. In 2022 she qualified as a barrister by completing a 5 year course in Braille at the University of Law.[1]
Inaba has bilateral microphtalmia, which is a condition where people are born with smaller eyes than average.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]
Inaba spent her early years in Lewisham, and then she relocated to Camden and attended mainstream schools in Surrey where education programs for visually impaired students were available.[3]
Inaba, completed her law degree at the University of Law Bloomsbury, where she prepared her own Braille materials from lecture notes, or from friends who read books to her. She mentioned that it took seven months for the university to obtain one of her two key study texts so she could read on her computer, and five months for the other.[4] It is also worth noting that Inaba was also the university’s first black and blind student.[5]
Career[edit]
Inaba launched her career in law by obtaining a degree in Law in September 2017 at the University of Law, London. In 2019 she then pursued a masters alongside a professional training course.[6]
In court, Jessikah uses an electronic machine with a Braille keyboard which has one key for each dot and a small screen where symbols pop up. This keeps her ears free to listen and she is able to read and edit using her hands.[7]
Jessikah, she is now planning to apply for a pupilage where as a when newly qualified barristers she will get her first placement in chambers.[8]
