Jethalal Champaklal Gada is a fictional character and one of the main characters who appears in the Indian sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Portrayed by actor Dilip Joshi, the character was created by show creators Asit Kumarr Modi based on the work Duniya Ne Oondha Chashma by Taarak Mehta and has been appearing in almost every episode for a decade-long run, from its premiere on July 28, 2008 to present. He was introduced in the show's pilot as a Gujarati businessman who lives in "Gokuldham Society" in Mumbai with his wife Daya Jethalal Gada and son Tapu and runs an electronic showroom. After a few episodes his eccentric villager father Champaklal also comes to live with him. Jethalal has a huge crush on his neighbour Babita Krishnan Iyer, whom he always tries to impress annoying her husband. He is said to be much unlucky as he always gets in trouble. Also he is always troubled by his wife's brother Sundarlal. Taarak Mehta, a resident in the society is his best friend who often helps him to get out of trouble. Jethalal often gets scolded by his father, Champaklal Gada who is very caring towards his daughter-in-law and Jethalal's wife, Daya. Jethalal often calls himself a Kuchhi Maanu (meaning a person from Kutch region).
Dilip Joshi was originally offered to choose a role from Jethalal and his father as he is also from the Gujarati origin as of the characters. Joshi thought that he can do much better with Jethalal than Champaklal and thus accepted it.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Jethalal is a wealthy businessman from a Gujarati family. He was born to Champaklal Gada in Bhachau of Kutch district of Gujarat. His mother passed away in his childhood. He runs an electronics showroom "Gada Electronics" in Andheri, Mumbai. He lives in "Gokuldham Society" along with his father Champaklal, wife Daya and son Tapu. He is befriended by all society members with Taarak Mehta being his best friend and his "fire brigade", as he always guides him whenever he gets in trouble. He is said to be the richest as well as the least educated among the all society members. He usually gets in trouble and sometimes ends up in lockup.
Characterization[edit | edit source]
Jethalal is a wealthy but very unlucky person who usually gets in trouble. He is always irritated by his showroom workers Natu Kaka and Bagha, and Bagha’s fiancée Bawri and sometimes his family and some of his neighbours; mostly Patrakar Popatlal, secretary Aatmaram Bhide and scientist Krishnan Iyer. His luck is worst and consequently he gets trapped into problems. Jethalal is always very distraught about his brother-in-law Sundar, who almost always makes him pay thousands of rupees of taxi fare whenever they meet. He is shown to be very tensed about his father who usually gets lost; his mischievous son Tapu who instigates the society secretary Bhide to fight with him; Natu Kaka who always demands a hike in his salary and Bagha who along with his business ideas and useless schemes and fiancée Bawri irritates him. His best friend is Taarak Mehta, who acts as his troubleshooter and whom Jethalal calls his "fire brigade" as he always extinguishes the fire that his problems create.
Secret Crush[edit | edit source]
Jethalal has a secret crush on Babita and leaves no chance to impress her. Whenever he leaves for his shop in the morning and meets Babita in the society compound, his wife often comes to the balcony and unknowingly embarrasses him in front of Babita. His main enemy is Iyer, husband of Babita, who is subconsciously aware of Jethalal’s crush on Babita and he tries to keep Jethalal away whenever he tries to initiate conversation with her.
Likes and Interests[edit | edit source]
Jethalal is a big foodie and loves to eat jalebi-fafda, a famous Gujarati snack. He loves oily and spicy Indian food. He appreciates and admires the culinary skills of his wife Daya and loves to eat all the dishes prepared by Daya on special occasions. Jethalal is often shown cladding designer shirts and garish clothes. He also watches Bollywood films and Amitabh Bachchan is his favourite actor. He also loves doing parties and gambling with other male members of society much to his father's anger, so he tries to hide it from him but ends up getting caught every time.

Dilip Joshi's portrayal of Jethalal has received widespread critical acclaim from critics and audience alike. He is considered the most significant character of the entire series and the show's widespread success over the long run has been attributed to him. He is also the highest paid cast member of the series. He has won numerous accolades for potraying this character.
