Srikant Tiwari, also known as Sri, is the main protagonist of the Indian espionage action-drama series The Family Man, portrayed by Manoj Bajpayee, created by Raj & DK.
Srikant is a middle-class man secretly working as an intelligence officer for the Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell (TASC), a part of the National Investigation Agency.[1] He is a character who tries to find a balance between his work and his family.[2] The series revolves around Srikant Tiwari who might be a regular family man but when at work, he is a 'world class spy' dealing with notorious terrorists.[3]. Srikant's wife, Suchitra Tiwari, is a typical working wife and someone who is not afraid of expressing herself. She works as an associate professor in the psychology department in a college.[4]
After appearing in the first two seasons of The Family Man, Bajpayee appeared for a voice-over cameo in Farzi. He is set to return in the third season of The Family Man.
Conception[edit]
Manoj Bajpayee, plays the role of Srikant Tiwari, a middle-class man who works for a cell of the National Investigation Agency. While he tries to protect the nation from terrorists, he also has to protect his family from the impact of his secretive, high-pressure, and low-paying job.[5]
"There is a lot of content out there for people to watch, so it becomes essential for us to not only make our series sincerely and sensitively but also to tell a unique story – something that concerns the common man and his uncommon life with his extra-ordinary struggle. To balance not only his family but also his job which is very, very demanding."
Srikant Tiwari's characteristics are said to be inspired from an uncle of director Raj Nidimoru, who was also a CBI officer.[7]
Appearances[edit]
The Family Man (Season 1)[edit]
The first season follows an investigation of a potential terrorist attack, while simultaneously following his slightly unsettled family life. Srikant and JK, along with their subordinates Zoya, Milind and Jayesh, and Force One officer Imran Pasha work on stopping Mission Zulfiqar from succeeding.[8] The show is inspired by real life newspaper articles.[9]
The Family Man (Season 2)[edit]
The second season's story line focuses on a Tamil Tigers-esque military resistance from Sri Lanka and their plans for a freedom fight. Initially, Srikant Tiwari, has quit T.A.S.C. and worked as an IT employee. Later, Srikant quits his IT job after an intense but hilarious confrontation with his boss and rejoins T.A.S.C. At the end, Srikant, along with his team members, get awarded by the prime minister, who also personally congratulates Srikant for staking his life on the line of duty.
Farzi (Season 1)[edit]
When Michael Vedanayagam needs help for executing a mission in Bangladesh, he calls Tiwari, who is his old friend. Tiwari sends two of his associates to the operation.
In this show, Bajpayee as Tiwari only had a voice-over cameo.
Reception[edit]
Karan Sanjay Shah of Rediff.com, in his review of the first season, said, "Manoj Bajpayee aces his role. His acting is top notch as always. He carries the series on his able shoulders."[10] Suresh Mathew of The Quint said, "Manoj Bajpayee in top form brings an earnest nuance to his performance as Srikant Tiwari."[11] Ektaa Malik of The Indian Express also praise Bajpayee's performance.[12] Swetha Ramakrishnan of Firstpost said, "The series is committed to showing Manoj Bajpayee as some sort of a "bechara" who can't catch a break. To his credit, Manoj Bajpayee's performance is impressive as always, but his comic timing came across as weak."[13]
Raja Sen of Mint also appreciated Bajpayee's role saying, "Bajpayee is alone reason enough to keep watching The Family Man. The actor strikes a terrific and unlikely balance between fatigue and efficiency, and his no-nonsense character is genuinely fascinating."[14]
Akhil Arora of NDTV wrote "Though Srikant is far from James Bond, he does turn into that late into the season as he barges recklessly into an enemy-controlled area against everyone's advice to apprehend a suspect when it could all so easily go wrong. In fact, his modus operandi is same as Bond's: walk through the front gate. And just because he's the hero of the story, Srikant is always the one calling the shots and knows more than those around him, even at the cost of the intelligence apparatus."[15]
Nandini Ramanth of Scroll.in reviewed "There are moments in the early episodes when it appears that Raj and DK are sending up the tradecraft genre and not taking this terrorist-hunting business too seriously. It is sometimes hard to tell whether Srikant is being serious or sardonic. Manoj Bajpayee's ability to suggest both states initially keeps The Family Man in a midway zone between muscular nationalist thriller and a True Lies-style spoof."[16]

Influence[edit]
Srikant Tiwari and his dialogues have become meme templates and an impact in popular culture. In the second season, Tiwari beats up his manager, Tanmay (Kaustav) after getting disgusted by his constant repetition of a phrase- "minimum guy". The scene became viral instantly.[27] Ministry of Information & Broadcasting used the scene of Tiwari telling his boss to let him stay alone as a template to spread awareness about physical distance.[28][29] Central Board of Secondary Education shared a meme where Srikant Tiwari dials Chellam Sir, asking him, “Sir wohAtharv ka CBSE result kab ayegaa? I'm too worried.” Chellam Sìr states "Don't be a minimum parent Sri, be optimistic.Relax! Jald hi ayega.” [30] Scenes like searching the meaning of sham, appreciating daughter for her English speaking skills, etc. also went viral.[31]
Tiwari's dialogue "Aa raha hoon...." became very popular. It was later used in his cameo in Farzi.
