Jinhao (Simplified Chinese: 金豪, Traditional Chinese: 金豪) is the main brand of Shanghai Qiangu Stationery Co Ltd (Simplified Chinese: 上海千古文具有限公司), a Chinese manufacturing company specialising in writing instruments. In the West they are known for their affordable fountain pens.

History[edit]

The company was established in 1988 in Jiangxi Province, but relocated to Shanghai in 2003. The company has two manufacturing factories and employs about 300 workers...[1] It has gained popularity for offering a range of affordable fountain pens. The company's products are sold internationally through various retail channels, including online marketplaces.[2] The name 金豪 (Jinhao) is composed of two characters in both traditional and simplified Chinese:

金 (Jīn) means gold or metallic
豪 (Háo) means grand or heroic

combining them together could therefore yield various interpretations including Golden Grandeur, Metallic Heroic, Golden Hero and Metallic Grandeur. The name is likely intended to evoke a sense of luxury, quality, or grandiosity.

Products[edit]

Design[edit]

Jinhao offers a variety of pen designs, ranging from models that mimic the style of more expensive brands to unique, original designs. The materials used in the construction of Jinhao pens vary but are generally metal or resin-based.

Nibs[edit]

The majority of Jinhao pens are equipped with stainless steel nibs, available in a variety of sizes from extra-fine to broad. Some models also offer specialised nibs, such as stub or fude, which are used for calligraphy and artistic writing.

Ink systems[edit]

Jinhao pens typically utilise cartridge/converter ink systems, although some models are available with piston-fillers or eyedroppers.

Market reception[edit]

Jinhao pens are generally well-received for their affordability and variety. However, they have been noted for inconsistent quality control, particularly in terms of nib performance and ink flow. Despite this, the brand remains popular among both beginner and experienced fountain pen users looking for budget-friendly options[3][4]
