Jochen Büchs (born April 2, 1956 in Kobe, Japan) is a German engineer who holds the Chair of Biochemical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University.

Career[edit]

Büchs studied chemical engineering at the Technical University of Munich, graduating in 1981 with a diploma. From 1982 to 1984, he spent time abroad in Japan at the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) and the University of Tokyo. His doctoral thesis was then carried out at the Jülich Research Center in the Institute for Biotechnology II. He received his doctorate in 1988. From 1988 to 1996 Büchs worked in industry at BASF in Ludwigshafen, where he worked in the field of bioprocess engineering. During this time, Büchs was head of the biotechnology pilot plant from 1993 to 1996. In 1996 he was called to the new chair for bioprocess engineering at the RWTH Aachen University.

Works[edit]

Büchs works in the field of developing new biotechnological production processes. These include, for example, the topics of fermentation technology and enzyme systems.

Awards[edit]

In 1996, Büchs received the Arnold Eucken Prize from the Society for Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering in the Association of German Engineers (VDI). In 2018 he received an honorary doctorate from Osaka University.
