Joe Lazarus is a British drummer, best known for his current work with British Hard rock band Voodoo Six[1] and for his collaboration with ex-Oceansize member, Mark Vennart. He has also performed with The Worldonfire, Inheaven, British Theatre (band) and Iron Maiden tribute bands Hi-on Maiden and Maiden uniteD.

Early life[edit]

As a child, Lazarus would often attend performances of uncle Steve Harris' band, Iron Maiden.[2] He was only four-years-old when he saw Nicko McBrain play at Donington Park during the Fear of the Dark Tour, a moment that he defines as pivotal in his decision to become a professional drummer.[3] He received his first kit, a Premier Cabria, at the age of 11 as a gift from his father.[4] Self-taught, he cites Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain, Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, Mark Heron, Keith Moon, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull (band) as his main drumming influences.

Career[edit]

The Worldonfire[edit]

Joe Lazarus' first band was The Worldonfire, a Harlow-based quartet featuring Haaris Ali (guitar), Bill Ginn (guitar), George Harris and Lazarus himself (drums), which he joined when he was only 15.[2] Their 2007 EP, Garden Cities of Tomorrow, was released in 2007 and was followed in 2009 by their first album Sail the Rough Sea, mixed by Chris Sheldon and published by Dead Planet Records. Promotion for the record took the band on an European Tour in November of the same year as a supporting act for Oceansize.[5] The Worldonfire also played at Sonisphere Festival in 2010.[5][6] The band has been in hiatus since that year.[2]

Inheaven[edit]

In 2015, Lazarus joined Inheaven, a British alternative indie rock quartet from South London[7] formed by Chloe Little (guitars, bass), James Taylor (vocals, guitar), Jake Lukas (guitar) and Lazarus on drums. Signed by Epic Records, they release 4 EPs: Regeneration (2015), Bitter Town (2015), Baby's Alright (2016) and Treats (2016), and a self-titled album in the summer of 2017. After an European tour supporting the British indie rock band Circa Waves,[8] Inheaven splits in 2018.[2]

Voodoo Six[edit]

Lazarus' work with Voodoo Six started in 2013, with the release of the band's fourth album, Songs to Invade Countries to. The band then embarked on a tour as supporting act for the European leg of Iron Maiden's Maiden England World Tour, which would take them to play in 18 different countries for a total audience of 300,000 people.[9] In spring 2014, the band set off on an European tour, playing in Sweden, Denmark and German as supporting act for UFO. After playing a headline tour across the UK, Sonisphere festival, and support shows with The Winery Dogs in Wolverhampton and London, they returned to Europe in the autumn of that same year, this time playing six headline shows in Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands.[10] In 2017, they release their fifth album, Make Way for the King. The current lineup of the band includes Nik Taylor Stoakes (vocals), Tony Newton (bass), Matt Pearce (guitar), Craig Price (guitar) and Joe Lazarus (drums). The band's most recent work, Simulation Game (2020), has received largely positive reviews from specialized media outlets.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Other projects[edit]

Lazarus played drums in two tracks of cousin Lauren Harris' debut album Calm Before the Storm (2008). He is also featured in the 2012 EP Dyed in the Wool Ghost by British Theatre, a side project of Oceansize's band members Mike Vennart and Richard "Gambler" Ingram, and has also drumming credits in Vennart's latest solo album, In the Dead, Dead Wood, which was released on November 6, 2020.

He has also appeared as special guest on tour for Steve Harris' British Lion and with Iron Maiden acoustic tribute band Maiden uniteD, and most recently, has been touring with Tara Lynch, filling in for Vinnie Appice.

Lazarus has also been featured in commercials for Superdry[18] and a March 2019 promo for Britain's Got Talent.[19]
