Joe Hutchinson (born March 11, 1964), better known by his stage name Joe Normal, is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock bands The Zeros and Cold Blue Rebels, and HUTCH. In 2010 he registered the Joe Normal moniker for Trademark.
Early life[edit]
Joe Normal was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and played piano before switching to guitar when he inherited his late grandfather's guitar at an early age.[1]
Musical career[edit]
The Double “O” Zeros[edit]
Joe formed The Double "O" Zeros in 1982, with his brother Jimmy "Mr. Insane" Hutchinson (drums) along with lead vocalist Sammy Serious and bassist Mace Beyers (Grey Daze).[2]
The band gained national exposure in 1984 when they recorded the theme song “H.O.W.A.R.D S.T.E.R.N.” for radio personality Howard Stern, who used the track as the theme music for his radio show on WNBC in New York City.[3]
The Zeros[edit]
After touring throughout the U.K. from the Spring to Fall of 1985, The Double "O" Zeros relocated to Los Angeles in 1986, and shortened their name to The Zeros. Characterized by their matching purple hair, the band was a prominent figure on the Hollywood club scene of the late 1980s - early 1990s.
In 1991 the band's record label Restless Records had the nightclubs Whisky a Go Go and Coconut Teaszer painted purple to commemorate the release of their album 4-3-2-1 The Zeros.
The Hutchinsons[edit]
Joe Normal and his brother Jimmy "Mr. Insane" Hutchinson left The Zeros in 1992 to form the Power pop trio The Hutchinsons with bassist Glenn Hayes. The Hutchinsons released their full-length album Plastic Fruit & Popcorn in 1997 on indie label RTG Productions before disbanding in 1998.
HUTCH[edit]
Joe Normal and bassist Glenn Hays (The Hutchinsons) recruited drummer Thom Sullivan (The Exies) for a new project called HUTCH. Los Angeles based Power Pop label Smile Records released HUTCH's Turn It Around in 2002.[4]
To celebrate the label's 20th Anniversary, Smile Records announced in January 2021 that it would be re-releasing several titles, including HUTCH's Turn It Around.[5]
Cold Blue Rebels[edit]
Following a Zeros reunion show in 2009, which saw the band sharing the stage with Jetboy, bassist Danny Dangerous (The Zeros) and Jetboy vocalist Mickey Finn decided to form the Psychobilly band Cold Blue Rebels. Danny Dangerous recommended Joe Normal for the lead guitar position.[2]
Cold Blue Rebels released their debut album, "Blood, Guts, n’ Rock & Roll" in January 2012,[6] and their second album "Love Of The Undead" in 2012.[7] On October 18, 2019, Cold Blue Rebels announced the release of a digital EP “The House That Frank Built” to commemorate the band's 10 year anniversary.[8]
The Conductors[edit]
Being the father of a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Joe formed The Conductors to entertain younger audiences and to bring awareness to Autism Spectrum Disorders and the advocacy group Autism Speaks.[9]
The Conductors released a full-length album, ‘’Navigating the Spectrum’’ in 2008. [10]
The Conductors has included The Zeros / Cold Blue Rebels bassist Danny Dangerous [11]
Joe Normal and the Anytown'rs[edit]
Joe Normal was considering quitting the music business when he attended a concert by Bruce Springsteen, which inspired him to start his own project, Joe Normal and the Anytown’rs. Enlisting guitarist Michael Lockwood bassist Tony Babylon (Izzy Stradlin) and drummer Tony Snow (Dramarama), they signed with Rankoutsider Records for the release of the 2018 EP, ‘’Entering Anytown USA’’. Big Stir Records released the single ‘’Don’t Hurt Me’’ in 2019.[12]
Other work[edit]
Hutchinson co-wrote with Sammy Hagar the title track to Hagar’s 2002 solo album Not 4 Sale. Hagar reached out to Hutchinson after having seen HUTCH perform on Bobby Flay’s Food Network television show FoodNation.[13]
Hutchinson played lead guitar on the 2002 album Sex, Drags & Rock ‘N’ Roll by Los Angeles glam-pop band Slow Motorcade.[14]
Hutchinson started independent record label New Jersey Phonograph in 2020 and regularly releases singles and albums in digital and CD format.
