John Bernard is a British businessman, start-up advisor[1], Board Member[2] and since 2017 a trustee of the Chartered Institute of Marketing [3] the largest professional marketing body in the world. Bernard was head of marketing of LG Mobile, Sony Ericsson, Mozilla and Siemens Mobile. He is credited as the creator of the "first moving 3D creative for an outdoor campaign" in the world[4], and also as the creator of the LG Mobile brand in Europe and the launching the Chocolate Phone.[5]. Bernard currently is the Marketing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Dexcom[6], a diabetes medical devices organisation.[7].

Career[edit]

After graduating from university, Bernard worked for the Granada plc, then moved to Ford Motor Company.[8] He then moved to the role of Marketing Manager for Siemens Mobile.[8]

LG Mobile[edit]

Bernard became Head of Marketing for LG Mobile in the United Kingdom[9][8] and was credited with winning 3 awards whilst with the Korean manufacturer.[10] Bernard worked for LG Mobile for almost four years, leaving to join a competitor.[11]

Sony Ericsson[edit]

Bernard then became part of the Global Marketing team for Sony Ericsson[12]. In his time there he signed up the musicians Justin Timberlake, Champions League (football) sponsorship and Usher for global campaigns[13] to produce a number of local marketing initiatives.

Mozilla[edit]

John Bernard was the Global Director of marketing at Mozilla[14] running Firefox OS, the mobile operating system. Firefox OS was a competitor to Android and Windows Phone and the first Firefox OS smartphone (ZTE Open) was launched in Spain in 2013. Firefox OS, in May 2015 was available on various mobile phones made by LG, Huawei and Alcatel in over 30 countries and was considered a success story on how to introduce a new product into a hugely competitive market[15].[16]

Bernard joined Mozilla[17] from Canonical Ltd.[18].

Recognition[edit]

John Bernard was awarded the UK Marketer of the Year for 2013,[19] Marketing Week magazine's 'Vision' 100 for 2014[20] and voted into the Drum Digirati, a list of the influential people across the breadth of the UK’s digital marketing industries.[21] Bernard was also shortlisted for the 'Digital Marketer of the Year' award.[22]

Current[edit]

Bernard is a Board member of two organisations, the Open Web Device Compliance Review Board[23] and the Chartered Institute of Marketing[24]

In 2018, he was conferred an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Huddersfield for 'Services to Marketing'.[25]
